It's been another weekly maintenance, and Nintendo still hasn't fixed memchunkhax2.1. Anyone want to wildly speculate on what has happened?

My uneducated guess is that Nintendo management told the programmers not to spend so much time on 3DS security for what is now a lost cause due to arm9loaderhax.

cuz ppl at nintendo use a9lh and they dont want to update it anymore
Can't tell if this is a joke or not, but are you serious? The people that made the console have to exploit their own console for some reason is basically what you're saying. What is beneficial with a9lh that the people at Nintendo can't already do? Unbricking? Check. Cia installing? They have dev consoles. Signature patching? So far they're the only ones that can sign anything legitimately.

There's a higher chance they've given up then this. Even if there are pros, you have to remember the Nintendo is a company to make money, not one that caters to its employees.

Hopefully, Nintendo will learn from their mistakes when creating the NX, if not well there goes another +1 Million

I am 90% sure Nintendo has just given up on the 3DS and they are just going to turn their focus onto a new product. At this point, if the nerds are right, there's no way to remove A9LH, so updating isn't going to fix it. And unless they update OoT (which is highly unlikely since they didn't even bother updating the Nintendo Select version,) it seems like we will always have an entry point. Nintendo is checkmated on this one.

Give the hackers time, it took forever for 10.3 to be supported, but it eventually happened.

I don't think Nintendo has forgotten about the 3ds and moved on. What's most likely happening is they're working on a really comprehensive and secure fix, and not some half-ass measure like before. Remember, this general arm11 exploit (memchunkhax) has been re-exploited twice. They don't want to be embarrassed again. (Nintendo: here's a hint, fix being able to downgrade by just getting the AM service)

No matter how much Nintendo works on it, there's always going to be someone who finds away around it. It didn't take long for someone to find an exploit for 10.4+ and it won't take them long for the next exploit.
Hell with hardmod, exploits are being found even faster.

It's worth their while to make things harder even though there will likely be new exploits. Easy piracy is more damaging than complex piracy.

This late in the game, there's not much damage that can be done. They didn't suffer much for the first few years and it was those strong years that kept the system afloat. At this point, they aren't going to get much out of the system.
Really, it would be best to just finish the system off now and start focusing on something new.

As long as Nintendo's still releasing Pokemon games for the 3ds (they are o/c), they will still care at least a little bit about piracy's affect on sales. :P

The real question is: how much does Nintendo lose in extra engineering costs vs. how much they lose in lost game sales and dev confidence in a secure platform (this is important for future platforms). I would suspect having a few decent sec engineers working on the issue a couple months is cheaper than losing any significant amount of sales.

There is also the issue of online cheating, although I'm not sure if it really affects Nintendo's bottom line that much.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
