how do you get the wii to actually download the files without disabling "tubehax" dns
Simple use a PC or android device ect to download nnu patcher put it on the sd card and insert it into wiiu. Switch wiiu on and load homebrew launcher then select nnu patcher the wiiu will reset to home screen then select eshop and pick what you want to download and it will start to download its that simple.

Can I create a new Nintendo Network ID on 5.5.1 without risking an unwanted FW update? I don't have an account and can't play Wii Sports Club.

thx

Yes, you should be able to.
You can create a Nintendo Network ID without updating. I did it on a fresh Wii U post 5.5.2 rollout. Ignore all prompts that demand that you update. If it won't let you create the Nintendo Network ID, use the NNU Patcher tool from the Homebrew Store.

Spoke too soon! Now it keeps nagging that update is ready to install with only "OK" as an option :( Hard Powering down so far works. Can I delete the downloaded update to keep it from nagging to install it?
Follow these steps:
  • Add the following DNS settings to block future updates
For each of your connections (and all future connections), do the following
  • Select the connection
  • Select “Change Settings”
  • Move to the second list and choose “DNS”
  • Set the DNS to “Don’t Auto-Obtain”
  • Set the DNS server IPs to the following servers
  • 168.235.092.108
  • 081.004.127.020
  • Select “Confirm”, then press (B) to save
  • These servers will block your SysNAND from being updated

Hi I tried creating a new I'D via NNU patcher, but keep getting error 102-2613. Tells me to check details are correct and try again. Have checked a number of times still no luck. Any ideas please.

Is this on a new Wii U? One you're just setting up? Do you have much data on it? I'd recommend doing a reformat (deleting all settings and content), keep it offline and do not provide any internet info until you're through the initial setup process. After that, setup up your internet connection with DNS to block Nintendo updates. Finally, create your NNID. Try a different email or ID from the one you were trying before. That should work. I know it sounds drastic, but these systems are limited to one profile per Wii U and weird things happen to it.

  1. Yes, it is safe to input the NNID confirmation code.
  2. The Wii U updates are designed to download and install automatically regardless of your settings. The Automatic Updates setting you're referring to has nothing to do with system updates. So, don't act indignant, because the only problem that happened was you didn't know what you were doing. Did you at least follow the directions I posted to make sure you don't accidentally update to 5.5.2 in the future?
