My NESC crashing issue continues.

I started completely from scratch (re-downloaded Hakchi, RetroArch, cores, no-intro ROMs), and flashed my NESC in increments to narrow down a cause.

I generally test The Legend of Zelda, as I've been testing with battery saves and suspend points. It was also the game I was playing when I first noticed this problem.

1) Restored original kernel - boots and saves just fine.
2) Installed custom kernel - original 30 games boot and save just fine.
3) Installed additional ROMs and set up folders - boots and saves just fine.
4) Installed RetroArch and use_nestopia hmods for certain games (all games are uncompressed). Games still running on kachikachi boot and save fine. However, I set up Legend of Zelda with Nestopia, and NESC crashes after I exit to menu and save a suspend point.
5) Uninstalled use_nestopia hmod, and loaded Chrono Trigger for testing (using snes9x2010 hmod). Legend of Zelda using FCEUmm seems to work fine, I did some 'stress tests' in ways it has crashed before, and it plays fine. With Chrono Trigger, it boots fine, plays fine, and seems to save OK (battery save, suspend point). However, if I shut off the NESC while highlighted on Chrono Trigger in the menu, it will boot up with Chrono Trigger highlighted, and then reboot, reboot, reboot, then completely crash. When I exit the game, and go to a different folder, and then shut down, it's ok.

I feel like Hakchi (or HHH) has done some permanent damage to my NES Classics. One I've had since January and have flashed 40+ times, but my other one is much newer, and has been flashed fewer than 10 time, so I don't think it's a hardware or wear and tear issue. I didn't have a problem like this through 3+ months of usage.

No one else has EVER had their Classic crash in the main menu after exiting a game? That's doubly frustrating. The use_nestopia hmod seemed to cause a problem, but I intermittently experience it with other emulators. For now, FCEUmm works fine.

Long story short, I'm getting a Raspberry Pi. :D
When you started from scratch did you uninstall all mods, uninstall hakchi from inside hakchi, flash original kernel, factory reset system, flash custom kernel, then add mods and games? Try that then go back to 2.14b.

Yup, did all that. 2.17 and 2.14b, same thing.

I know nothing about programming or the inner workings of these things, but the common denominator seems to be with saving. The problems I have all revolve around that. But still, I did numerous factory resets from within the NESC before and after I flashed the original kernel.

Thanks for the vid. I've got super cars, Prince if persia, stunt car racer and a bunch of pinball games working great now. :)

There's quite a few games that don't work as they have separate folders on a dos install that seem to crash dosbox on the nes mini (moonstone, alienbreed etc) but I'm still happy to have some decent old dos games working (it fills the gap a bit seeing as there's no amiga emu) . :)

Be careful adjusting cpu cycle settings. If You go too high, you will break DOSBOX. An uninstall, reinstall does not fix it, either. You can safely go to 3000. To fix it, if messed up, requires ftp or clovershell hmod plus client. My video shows info. But, if careful, and not passing 3000, You will Be fine.

GOOD NEWS! I updated MAME 2003 HMOD, and it now has BETTER compatibility!

*I will try to update every hmod, accordingly. And, I will do my best to make them readily available by the weekend. I just want to and need to test a few perimeters*

UPDATE: Spiderman & Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder both work great! Let me know if you want any other games tested! I will share the hmod tomorrow, since I will not be home til then.

I had this on the backburner for awhile. But, many of our HMODS are severely outdated. I decided to run a few tests and UPDATE them to as current as I could. As a result, many games that previously did not run on MAME 2003, now run! This, of course, does not include the MAME 2000 ones like Tapper, Spy Hunter, Journey, Rampage, and so on. I am, more or less, talking ones like Ninja Baseball Batman! Yes, I got Ninja Baseball Batman running on MAME 2003! I will post a video in the next day or two, and once finalized, gladly share my updated MAME 2003 hmod with those who want to play around with it! I also plan on updating every other HMOD I can. We will have to tread lightly on the SNES 2010, just in case it re-affects save states. But, thus far, I am loving the updated MAME 2003! I even got some System 32 games to load! Check back on this topic in a day or two, and you will see video results of the updated hmod in action! Private message only (temporarily) for the HMOD, so I can fill anyone in on specific details.

I also am planning on trying to test out other hmods, such as Nintendo DS, Atari Jaguar, and a potential way to add NES Manuals:) I also have a few ideas that may possibly get MAME 2010/2014 running, as well as Turbografx-CD emulation...maybe, even scummv:)

In any case, I wil revision these updated HMODS in such a way that they will easily be discernible from the outdated ones. More Games is all I can say:)

Thanks to the awesome peeps at libretro for their hard work on these cores!

More than an updated hmod, I'd LOVE to be able to have the manuals for the games. What the NES classic has now is alright, I guess, but I don't have a phone or a tablet to scan that code or whatever it is. Nor do I want one.

One small request if it would even be possible....I'd LOVE to have a way to play Apple II games on the NES classic.....like I said, if it's even possible....

Maybe Linapple can work if you make a hmod out of it. Unfortunately as with Amiga and others the core hasn't been optimized to work without mouse and keyboard for now. With some luck, Drastic for emulating DS games might actually work very well. I know it runs smooth under RetroArch on Retropie 2, so technically it could run on NES Mini. Most cores that are compatible have been sorted months ago by PCM720. If KMFDmanic gets a few more cores to work.. Great. I hope he will share them with PCM720 though when he sorts it out. Still 95% of working cores have been accounted for. DS emulation would be very awesome, so I wish him luck.

Edit : Just realized that the core for DS should probably be DeSmuME, no idea how that runs on a retropie

Nintendo DS runs not too bad on the pi...in Emulationstation..most work..a few don't..but you have to go into retroarch and resize the gameplay screen.

Is there a way to prevent suspend points (maybe in the command line) from being created for specific cores? I know there's a modified snes9x2010 core that disabled suspend points because it was creating huge files.

I'd like to have suspend points disabled for Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Mame2003, fba_neogeo, and fba_cps2.

Yes you can just edit the launch scripts. Like you see here. Just add --ra-nosaves https://github.com/ClusterM/retroarch-clover/issues/61

This only disables the save state option in the GUI of the NES Mini, battery saves are still enabled with this script.
Yes he is talking about suspend points which is what that is. Suspend points is not the same as battery saves so obviously this wouldn't disable in game saves only stops suspend points from being created when you exit the game.

Got it... however battery saves is one of the downfalls on 2.14b right now, you can't delete them or manage them whatsoever. Maybe I am wrong but I think the reason he asking this is to somewhat control the saves on his Mini so he doesn't get C8 errors in the future. I mean.. come on if you don't want to save a game you just don't save right? And if you decide to save you can always delete them right ? (Along with reset factory settings). The person we are talking about here is the same NESjimbo, you told to stick with 2.14 right? Don't know... just giving my two cents here.

My reboot/crash problem has become an annoying hassle. I'll soon report if killing suspend points fixes it.

I've reverted to using stock NES emulator for all NES games (except where needed like Crisis Force, Gradius 2, Gun-Nac, etc.) as it doesn't crash when exiting out of it. I am disabling suspend points for all RetroArch emulators. I'll just treat those games like I'm playing on original hardware and use battery saves for games that offer them, or start from scratch or use passwords for everything else.

What I do is use 2.14b for all my games and cores. Then I open up 2.17 to manage the save states.

The thing is, I'm not even getting the C8 error screen, it just reboots or shuts down when I exit a game. I consider myself lucky if I'm able to actually save a suspend point.

I will miss FC/Nestopia for NES emulation, I much prefer their color palettes. kachikachi is 100% stable, and save states > better palette. Once I get my RPi up and running, I may never touch this again.
