I'm not going to try and justify shit. I know piracy is wrong, but I don't give a fuck, and I don't care what moralfags tell me. Once that 5.5 piracy hack comes out, I'm buying a Wii-U for the sole purpose of piracy. Also, I'm pretty hyped for playing Gamecube games and emulators on that comfy as fuck tablet controller.:)

Piracy is bad and everything... but Nintendo's prices on games are just ridiculoud, to say the least. Especially fo the 3DS. 50$ for something that's essentially a mobile game is unheard of

Alright, so here is the thing.

Piracy doesn't hurt developers as much as people think, it hurts the publishers. Developers get paid a salary. If a game doesn't sell well due to Piracy, it only hurts the Developers in terms of corporate restructuring and lack of funding. If the publishers don't have money to throw at a sequel, they wont.

As we've seen with the PSP, Piracy can boost the sales of a dying console through the roof. The PSP couldnt compete with the DS, but what it had was an open firmware which people used to accomplish piracy and emulation, meaning one device to do all your gaming, old and new. If Sony saw this and werent so cautious with the Vita, they probably wouldnt have given up on it in US/EU

Sales can also be increased of consoles doing well, see the Wii and SmashHax/TwilightLoader or whatever they were called, 360 and JTAG and PS3 with GeoHot.

Now, where does piracy leave the company that created the consoles? Laughing all the way to the bank.

They get to boost their sales numbers making stockholders happy, they get to create and ship more units, they get to make more good games for people to play illegally but we've seen that hardware sales on consoles that get cracked open start to make up for the lack of software sales.

If you buy a Wii U to pirate Nintendoland, you're doing Nintendo a favor. Nintendoland is like $10 and pretty much impossible to get new unless you go for a bundle. Buy it used and no money goes back to Nintendo anyway. Pretty much all launch titles are like that, we've past the point of no return where they stop manufacturing and shipping new versions of old games unless they're the ones in super high demand (Bayo 2/Wind Waker HD), so none of your hard earned money is going back to the company making the games.

Where does this leave companies who arent Nintendo publishing games for the Wii U? The same place they are now, regretting their decision to create/publish for the Wii U, and piracy isnt going to help/worsen that.

Piracy can save Nintendo honestly, if they clamp too hard down on the exploits then nobody is going to bother buying the console and they'll be even more in the red then they are now, but then again you cant ALLOW piracy on your system, its just bad business. But we cant forget Mr.Gary from Sega and ECHELON.TXT, and how it gave the Dreamcast just a little bit more life before Sega shut it down for good. If they cut homebrew out of the equation entirely, they might be next in line behind Sega and Atari for selling off their best series to the highest bidder and giving up on the hardware we love entirely.

Then again this is all maybes and probablys, and Nintendo isnt going anywhere because the 3DS makes bank even without Gateway/CubeHax/TubeHax/HacksHax/SmackHax

I'm a game developer and I have no problem with piracy, its free marketing and multiple studies have shown, that pirates ironically, are among the largest consumers of legitimate content (in most cases, anyways).

I just can't fully endorse it, because Nintendo wouldn't like that too much.

I'm a licensed Wii U (indie), developer. My company is just getting off the ground, so we haven't released anything yet

Good luck. I know one of the developers behind Affordable Space Adventures (he even gave me a free ASA key the last time we partied $_$). It sounds like a thrill - hope you will feel the same!

Also, in terms of pirating - most of the guys I know that pirate (and myself included whenever the moment is there) does it out of ease/simplicity (pirating games have until recent years been the easiest way of getting them) and not for the money.
I guess those types og pirate are some of those that pump a lot of money into the gaming industry (and we are gamers at heart, so we share a lot of our experience among each other about the games so more of us buy them - i.e. more sales)

well heres my take on piracy, i dont mind it at all and anyone is free to choose and most of the people who pirate a game probably would never buy it so theres no money lost in most cases, i pirated few wii games, some games i played like 20 mins and deleted them, the games i actualy finished pirated i actualy bought them legit aftwerwards like newe super mario bros wii, and mario galaxy, so for my pirating is basicaly demo testing lol, i play them for awhile if i like i buy the original sometime later if not then i probably didnt spent even an hour playing so i delete them anyway lol.

same for wiiu all the games i liked to play in loadiine i bought them afterwards the ones i didnt i deleted them without even spending 1 hour in them, same is true for my ds,psp,ps1,ps2 and ps3 i use piracy to test the game if i like it i buy it latter when the price drops obviously.

I still have a problem with the term "piracy", a pirate for me is much closer to the person who makes money on the games in the place of the original distributer, like gateway, xkey etc... but I'll keep using the term for the sake of understanding.

Yeah people will pirate for different reasons or claim to, but I agree that at the end of the day, people who take the time to hack/pirate/backup loading, are usually the biggest consumers of games than regular people who buy a game legitimately once in a while.

Enabling "piracy/backup loading" is the interesting part here, I agree it increases console sales, for example for me it was the thing that motivated me to buy a psp back then, and xbox 360. (In fact I bought 3 3ds consoles for my nieces when installing CIA games was possible) The only time I ever considered buying a ps4 was after hearing about the kernel exploit few days ago. The interesting part here is, for example after I bought xbox360 for backup loading, I played few games for few minutes, and then one game I liked (was king of fighters) I ended up buying a membership just to play it online, not only that, I eventually found an interesting game in the xbox store which I bought too. none of that would happen if backup loading wasn't enabled for me in xbox 360.

I always say the pc is the best example, you have the easiest way to play games for free, some people end up buying games they like so much, in most cases people end up buying games they want to play online, and I am one of them, I got a lot of games on steam and origin and even the useless Uplay. Why are these games still come out on the pc if "pirating" them was so easy ?

I guess the only down part of it for nintendo is online, if nintendo had some strong security to prevent online playing with unlegitmate copies of games, that would be ideal in my opinion, or having to pay for online like xbox, either one of the two would force people to buy the games they really like/want to play online, option two sucks actually ^^' I rather just buy the game I want to play online once than having to pay for online always.

So stealing is awesome, gotcha!
Ok so took this out of the Hykem 5.5 exploit thread to not annoy anyone there.
I never said stealing is awesome, but it's also not the worst.
Plus I actually buy most games I have, I only pirate very few and it's usually in times where I have little to spent.

Games are overpriced, being able to get them for free is amazing
The problem with most game companies is they are making loads of money and on top of that give bad deals via Virtual Console + reselling ps2 games at high prices (*cough Sony cough*)

So the good things are you can't get ripped off etc. and these companies are rich as fuck anyway

The massive exceptions to the pirating rule I can think of are:

"Virtual boy" - because Nintendo's virtual boy is almost impossible to pirate I think, and also It didn't have many games, cant remember price

"Wii U" (Only at launch, pirating it after is fine) - I feel that Nintendo released a good console with some decent games at alright prices however it had a bad launch and is being discontinued earlier than other Nintendo systems
I feel it needs a bit more support than the others however despite being a good console with some nicely priced games, gamers who have recently purchased one will not be able to get the most out this short generation
and I recommend them waiting for Hykems 5.5 or if they wanna get games like xenoblade chroincles x or splatoon which are slightly overpriced

As for every other console ever ,gamers needn't worry about pirating as those all sell really well or

Making a copy of your own game is way different than downloading it for free

That's illegal , as much as running unsigned content on your nintendo device :). As far as the publishers are concerned
We need to first define "stealing" and "pirating" in this context, before determining if they are wrong or right or awesome or whatever...

I have a flash cart for my virtual boy, since I can't reasonably find decently priced games for it. I feel as though it's fine to pirate for old game consoles since they can't possibly be making any money off of buying used games from other people.
