So, I'm in a bit of a bind...

I'm on 9.2, but I need to update my Pokemon X game so I can go online, but to access the EShop I need to update my 3DS...

Does anyone know if it's possible to simply overwrite the update files on the SD card? Isn't that where they store the cart updates? Or would each users cart update be uniquely signed?

9.2 emunand or sysnand?

if it's sysnand then there's no way. you need to have emunand

Sysnand. I guess I just have to hope progress on all this awesome 9.2 homebrew keeps on strong and a cartless emunand becomes possible.

well.. as far as I know there's currently only two ways to get updates.
either by the official way in eShop (which requires you have the latest firmware and a game from the same region as your console's region) or by getting the updates online in CIA format and install them manually yourself (which you can do for any region, in any firmware but only using emunand)

At least I think it's like that unless sysnand allows for these CIA files to be install which I doubt. They're probably not signed properly to allow that.

Is the Gateway complicated to use? I'm considering one now since my MH4 3DS LL is now 9.2(haven't touched it since October since I got my MH4G N3DS) and how fast are NA games' releases? I will be picking up MH4U CE & MH4U Bundle on Feb 13 but I'll probably just hold on to my bundle for an edition I'll like in the future but want to play MH4U on day one with friends.

Edit: I guess even if I were to back up my copy that I'm getting, I still wouldn't be able to play via adhoc with my friends because it seems that 4 & 4G needed to be patched?

After I first set up emunand I was able to download lots of game updates from the eshop before I had loaded any roms on the gateway.

To just play games it is fairly simple. If you start wanting to dump existing saves, save editing, converting and all sorts of other things it gets very complicated.

I was able to set it up in half hour and train my 9 year old on it in 10 minutes. Works fine for playing games.

Hello guys,

I bought a new Nintendo 3DS XL Majora's Mask Limited, which I'll have on February 13th.
Which is the best option about flashcarts?

Thank you.

Thank you.

Right now, you can only use Sky3DS or one of its clones. It's not really about being the best option but about being the only option available. lol

But perhaps Gateway will release the support for N3DS at that time and if so, that's what I would recommend for you.

I'm having some issues with my NNID. I get an error when using it (ie connecting to eShop or whatever).
I formatted sysNAND (to unlink the two NANDs), so my emuNAND now contains the "original" system, yet that spews some error.

A bit of research turned up this may be related to the fact that an NNID can only be active on one system at a time.
How do I go about fixing this? I read somewhere you need to re-link your NNID on sysNAND, but I can't do that since it prompts me to update to the latest firmware.

So as far as my understanding:

  • Sky3DS
  • Play 3DS games only.
  • Just stick card in and play.
  • No eShop games, no emulators.
  • Prone to patching in the future.
  • Gateway
  • Play 3DS and eShop.
  • Possibility at emulators in the future.
  • Somewhat a hassle to set up and also to startup each time.
  • Future patches won't matter due to software fixes.

Sound about right?

  • Gateway
  • Play 3DS and eShop. < also DLC
  • Possibility at emulators in the future. < there are already emulators in development that currently work such as blargsnes but none of that is exactly GW exclusive
  • Somewhat a hassle to set up and also to startup each time. < depends on each person really. some ppl think like that, I find it particularly easy. so it depends
  • Future patches won't matter due to software fixes.

I can't help much with this one since I could never test it (I have a 4.5 3DS). But according to several people, it can be done without it being updated. I just wish I knew exactly how so that I can explain to you... :\

Simply put yes. Gateway also has a load of features you're missing from the list but to the common user you've pretty much got it.

lemanuel has also described them in further detail in his quote above ^ :P

"According to several people". How did you find out about it? Any specific search terms or users I should look into? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks. The DLC part I didn't know and that's important too.
I didn't realize they made emulators that can work on the Sky3DS so also good to know.
By hassle I just mean anything more than turning it on and go. haha

well... I don't know if you ever read this thread but some people mention it there a few times: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutoria...d-emunand-and-eshop-working-correctly.378275/

Back at Maxconsole's forum, there's been other users who said they were successful in doing it and obvious they didn't get updated. The problem is that they only mentioned entering the NNID Settings.

As for the thread you created, someone has already said there as well that he could do it.

I just can't help much more since I really have no personal experience with doing it inside sysnand (NNID doesn't exist in 4.5)

Thanks for the link.
Someone mentions they also had trouble re-linking on sysNAND (though due to a different error), and formatting the sysNAND a second time fixed it. I take it there's no harm in my trying that, since I don't have any other options right now?

well... you already formatted it once so it's not like you'll lose anything by doing it twice (assuming you have the backup from when you did it the first time). I don't know if it will work but I can't see any problem in trying.
