Hey guys, I just got the GW. So I'm asking some questions to clear things up

1 : I read the manual that you can back up save game from a retail card. If so, can I use its save for the rom of the same game (Pokemon) ? and how if possible.
2 : I've been planning to buy a Powersave, but I heard it only works with retail card? Is this true or it can work with GW as well?

Please help, thanks.
Regarding saves
its all pretty complicated

first thing first, if the game uses 6.x encryption(pretty much all games released with 6.x+ on cart) and was played on a retail console.......no, there is no way to use that save....but if the game uses 6.x save encryption and was played in classic mode you can go to step 2

secondly the save will only work if its either a nand saving game i.e pokemon or animal crossing or the save is 512kb when dumped, if its smaller than 512kb it will not be usable

and finally if you pass both them barriers you will need to dump the cart the save is coming from and rename it to (game name).3dz, it will not work unless you have a dump from the exact cart the save came from and rename it to .3dz
As for powersaves, it will only work with retail carts, also even.if you had newer games (like Pokemon) and played them in gateway classic mode.....it also will not work with power saves as gateway uses different save encryption than a retail console on games released with the 6.x fw

Thanks for the reply, just another quick question. If I want to play online with my Pkm X rom. Do I have to do anything specificly or just go online like normal?

Ah, so this still hasn't be "fixed"? And will it save a tthe moment you quit, or at the last in-game save?
Wait, what is this about saving a game? Does the game not save within the game's save feature?

And do you have to quit to the main menu of the 3ds to switch games? Or is there a button combo to bring up a game list?
Gateway writes the save file to the sd card. But it won't do this unless you close the game by pressing Home -> x, or power off with the power button.

And yes, you have to quit the game to switch games.

Aha, no biggie then. It's nothing hard or difficult to remember. So, two more questions. First, as many of you have seen, the updated GW firmware is coming. How do you update? And what Micro SD should I use with my GW, when I get it?

1, just replace the launcher.dat file on the 3DS's SD card,
2, whatever card fits your budget/size requerments....personally i use a 32GB, i wouldnt really have any use for anything bigger....but if you want loads of games on it at the same time you can go for a 64GB or 128GB....you could even go smaller if you would be happly with a few on at a time....only thing to make sure is you get a legit card.....avoid ebay or any third party sellers on amazon, i would suggest you just get one from a reputable store

Hello People!

I bought a Gateway 3DS and hacked my v4.2 Nintendo 3DS. I can successfully log into "gateway" mode but I didn't update my emunand, is that mandatory?

I also formatted my micro sd in exFat and "dragged and dropped" few games. Now, even though I use the red card and log to Gateway mode, nothing happens when I hit "select" :( Shouldn't the multirom menu pop-up? Thank you!!

I formatted my micro sd in ex fat and some of my games were showing up as white blank squares. Try formatting again and change the file system to ntfs or Fat32. Exfat does not always read correctly on certain devices.

isn't it possible to save on my retail copy of pokemon y, like normally without using a gateway at all, in gateway classic mode? If not, would it even be worth keeping the retail game? has it any benefits, comparing to a downloaded or dumped rom?

and is it the same thing for mario golf? as I read that saving is different for pokemon and animal crossing.

OK, at my wits end here. So far I've not needed to create an emuNAND, but now I've decided to make one to flash to my sysNAND using the hardware mod.
I've tried 2 SDs so far but each time when I format the cards it no progress bar appears or it does and the bar doesn't fill up. I've tried waiting anyway for 20+ minutes and it also doesn't finish.

I then inspected the cards afterwards with gParted, it looks like Gateway has managed to make a 2.7GiB FAT32 partition for eShop and personal data but has 1GiB unallocated space which should be for the emuNAND that it hasn't managed to format with a filesystem.

Ok super noob here. Did some reading, picked up a new 4.5 DS XL from my local Walmart. Waiting on my 4gig, 32gig micro SD and Gateway cards to arrive. I pretty much understand the whole exploit thing and booting into gateway mode. What I don't get is this whole Emunand business. What is emunand? Different from sysnand? I'm assuming my sysnand is the main system I want to keep on 4.5 right?

Do I need to update it? Or can I stay on the stock 4.5 emunand? The one video I watched the guy said not to update it because it breaks something? But I also know the gateway team is about to release another update. I have zero plans on playing online or connecting to the eshop (I think thats what its called) just want to run backups of my lastest 3DS games from my SD card, and be able to save my games.

And lets say I owned a retail 3ds game that wouldn't allow me to save because it uses the higher (emunand?) encryption than what I'm currently on, would a scene rip of that game still contain that same encryption or would it be removed? And if it is removed then what are the benefits of upgrading the emunand to a higher number?
