My girlfriend ordered the game on eBay and when it came it has a save file already on it (obviously...)

I've been through the electronic manual from the home menu, been on the save section but it says nothing about deleting! I've searched all over google for an answer too, but I've not managed to find anything that can tell us how to :S

There must be a way! Right...?

as far as i know the professor layton series never had an option to delete the save... easiest way would be to corrupt it by ejecting the game while saving (maybe that helps? not sure to be honest o.o)

If you read the manual of every game, if you hold down A+B+X+Y+L+R right after booting the game, you will be prompted if you want to delete all the save data.

Just tried that on Prof. Layton and the Miracle mask (Not the same game though) and it didn't work.

Another Solution is to just start a new game and overwrite the old save data with your new progress.
That's what i did with my "Prof. Layton and the Curious village" cassette

--EDIT--

A quick google regarding you issue comes back with results about corrupting the save data.
But there was a risk were the game later wouldn't either load or save a new game.

Just start a new game.

Weird then...if you look through the manual there is usually a chapter about deleting save data.

I actually dug up the manual now, It's very thin and it doesn't address anything about deleting or clearing game data.
Maybe they skipped implementing that function.

Have you tried looking through the digital one for the game via the 3DS itself? I guess some games don't support that function which is kind of strange.

One of the weirder games is PAL pokemon ranger shadows of almia.
For whatever reason it permanently locks in the text language when first run, without telling you.

I accidentally saved my game into the wrong file and now I have a duplicate I can't erase without wiping my completed save too.

Frowny face.

Yeah I thought that first, I didn't come in blindly from this :P Googled etc but yeah sae corruption was a common answer, she's just got to the first save point and yes, you can actually overwrite the save when it asks so all is good! :)

There was actually a really big complaint with Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D not having a deletable save file either.

Yeah I remember this quite well actually! Wasn't there some kind of software that enabled people to delete it in the end, sure I saw it here on GBATemp.
Funny, the electronic one had even less pages.

I can't access the any from the game though, unless i have forgotten how to find it.

For the electronic manual of any 3DS game, just press the home menu and it's the centre option on the bottom of the touch screen :) (unless that's not what you're talking about :P)

Wow! That's so weird… I thought all 3DS games had an electronic manual like that :S

Much like Brian117 said actually about the save deletion method, there should be universal options for all games hahaha!

Sicklyboy, seems like a lot of effort tbh! Does that work for 3DS games? Besides it's alright now we just overwrote it with the new game file :)

I bought a copy on Ebay for my wife.

You cannot delete the old save games - only overwrite them.

However, it is possible to reset the save data so you get back to 3 empty slots. - I downloaded the ".sav" file to my PC with a Save Dongle an then changed a few characters in the file (After creating a backup!). I reloaded the save file back to the card and when the game started it gave a message "Resetting save data" and that was it, back to three empty slots.

My wife has just started to play it and all is working fine.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
