I still don't understand how it could possibly matter though.

It could be possible that it's going through the Wii's IOS files to verify them as legit and not modified, and if it hits one it doesn't like, it stops updating.

Although, that theory could be thrown out of the window - People that haven't modded are getting the error as well.

Its as good as anything anyone else has come up with, strange but its obviously an IOS causing it.

I can absolutely confirm that, in my case, restoring IOS36 to the original without the ES_IDENTIFY patch has allowed my Wii U to be updated.

I used MMM & Pimp My Wii (Multi Mod Manager) to review my IOS installs. I uninstalled cIOS 249,250,251,236 and re-installed the original IOS36 wad I previously dumped from Bluedump when I softmodded my vWii. I also removed HBC.

Mind you I had tried patching along the way. Here's what I tried as a list (starting from last night, and after a trip to Bestbuy for a USB lan adapter).
  1. Change my DNS to Google DNS with my wireless connection - Failed to update
  2. #1 Above and set my own IP manually with my wireless connection - Failed to update
  3. Change DNS with my wired connection - Failed to update
  4. #3 plus manual IP - Failed to update
  5. Do # 1-4 on another internet connection. - Failed to update
  6. Uninstall HBC - Failed to update
  7. (Reinstall HBC so I could...) Uninstall cIOS 249,250,251,236 - Failed to update
  8. Uninstall HBC with the cIOS 249,250,251,236 all already removed - Failed to update
  9. Checked every IOS via Pimp My Wii test and found out that IOS36 was ES_ID patched, installed the original WADs for IOS36 from when I Bluedump-ed them during my original vWii softmod.. UPDATE WORKED!
Hooray. # 6-9 were done on my original connection through a wired option...

My suspicion has to do with IOS36 and the ES_ID patch for now. Would love someone to verify that. Hope this helps someone else!

Btw all that was so I can play Super Mario 3D World. :)

Also It fixed both errors 105-3102 & 162-0002

Hey, thanks for the looking in to this problem and finding a solution! I attempted to softmod my vWii using a few youtube tutorials. I had seen many discussions saying the Wii U side would not be affected in any way, and figured it was worth the risk because I already owned a Wii. I am not sure where I went wrong or which videos I specifically followed, because I did this around a month ago. One may have been this: All I remember is I encountered an error with one method, so switched tutorials and picked up where I left off on another after installing homebrew. I then installed cIOS to 249, 250, and 251 using D2X cIOS Installer Mod 2.2 and figured I had been succesful after loaders and other homebrew apps started working. I currently had 4.0.0. When the 4.0.2 update came out, I got the error code 105-3102 when trying to update over wifi. I suspect I may have installed the wrong IOS. Is there a specific way I should uninstall the IOS? Also, I do not entirely understand what you mean by the ES_IDENTITY patch or original IOS36 wad. I would appreciate any advice or links to programs I should use to uninstall the IOS and restore the original. Thanks again!

I may have.. Does messing with IOS36 mean installing an IOS on slot 236? I remember another source directing me to do this.
I don't know if this will work, but you can try it. First you need to install a clean IOS36 (I'll pm you one.) put the IOS in the root of the sd card and use YAWMM_EN to install it. After that use MMM to uninstall cIOS 236,249,250, and 251 DO NOT uninstall or mess with any other IOSes. finally uninstall HBC and then try to update. post a reply and tell me if it works or not.

I came across a new problem, fixed a few errors with the IOS36 solution but I keep getting an error code of 105-3733 when updating games. I'm gonna try a few things and see what I can come up with. Is anyone else getting this error?

I think you should start a thread with a list of all the error codes you got, and then put the solutions to the error codes you know how to fix.

I kinda did,
http://gbatemp.net/threads/error-162-0002-possible-solutions.355448/

Strangely with the error code 105-3733 (which is an unknown code, even by Nintendo) its not an IOS causing it. I have deleted every cIOS and restored all patched IOSs to original and even deleted the HBC as well. I can update games that are small like under 75mb but anything higher it fails on install with the 105-3733 error. I have also noticed that when downloading and failing on install, that the download size varies from 10-20mb. For example, today I was trying to install the update to Batman Arkham Origins and it failed on install and I noticed it was 108mb. So, I deleted the corrupted file and launched the game again and the update started again then failed on install again. This time the file size was 148mb, and after trying 2 more times to download/install this update I get 2 different sizes of 102mb and 114mb. I can't seem to figure out why this is happening, google tells me nothing and gives me nothing to go on.

So I downloaded YAWMM from this thread: http://gbatemp.net/threads/yet-another-wad-manager-mod.210290/ I put the WAD you linked me in the root of the SD card. First it asks you to select an IOS version, and IOS249 is there by default. I press A to accept this and it asks for NAND emulator device, with disabled as the default choice. I press A to accept this, press A to select Wii SD slot as my storage device, press B to leave WAD folder and go to root of my SD card, and finally select the IOS36 WAD. Then, when I press A to install, it says opening, please wait... Ok! Installing WAD, please wait... Installing ticket... ERROR! (ret = -1017) Any ideas?
