Stupid question (please please please don't hate me, I promised I tried to google the answer first!): Will Wii games be upscaled to 720p or 1080p when played on the Wii U? Or does it just flat-out not work that way? Or do we just not know yet?
Reggie says no upscaling.

"That’s really driven by the hardware and the original Wii games were built for a specific type of hardware," said Reggie talking to GameTrailers about the prospect of Wii games being upscaled when played back on Wii U. "There’s no mechanism to ‘up-res’ that unless we launch a brand new game."

The only way to upscale is by using Dolphin.

Darn. Thanks for telling me, though.

But if Dolphin can upscale the games, where is Reggie getting off saying that it's "impossible" without releasing a new game?

Sounds like "Wii Mode" is an app on the desktop. I wonder if it runs an EmuNAND of the original wii. Hoping for day 1 wii mode hackability.

Why is everybody pissing their pants over 32gb of storage like its some enormous amount? 32gb is actually really really crap by today's standards, I mean look at the PS3 and 360 they have had way more than that for years. In this day in age 32gb really doesn't go a long way in terms of live/psn games, dlc and game patches etc. I would have hoped to have seen around 250gb myself, anyway I hope the wii u's memory is expandable via usb etc.
Well good news for you. It is.

Reggie confirmed it himself http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/09/wii_u_memory_can_be_easily_expanded_with_usb_hard_drives

Notice all the bugs that dolphin has? If they want the Wii U to be backwards compatible with the Wii games then they are best to run them as intended so they don't introduce any bugs or unforeseen problems. There's certainly a lot more to it than just that, but that was the easiest for me to describe.

Thanks for telling me. I've only played with dolphin a couple times, so I didn't know about all those bugs. But I would've thought those bugs would be more from the emulation in general, rather than just upscalling the resolution.

The whole thing about upscaling sounds off, as it makes me feel Nintendo is responding to "rendering at 1080p" rather than "upscaling to 1080p"
Don't GameCube games upscale to 480p when you use a component cable on the Wii?

The thing though is that the Gamecube does 480p, as well as the Wii, so playing a GC game on the Wii won't have any problems with the display. The WiiU however goes up to 1080p, and if we were to play a Wii game on it when the system is set at that resolution, would it change the display mode down to 480p, or would it upscale the 480p image to 1080p? That's what I'm confused about the remark with what Nintendo says about upscaling. Upscaling is simply taking the original rendered image, and scaling it up with filters as necessary. This is the technique used on the 3DS when playing DS games, and the DS hardware ability to render 3D graphics is far different from the usual method, yet they got it to work. It isn't trying to render at the higher resolution.

Nintendo has confirmed multiple times Wii games shall not be displayed at 1080p nor 720p upscaled other than 480p res.

Display mode will go down to 480P when in Wii mode.

Oh one more thing Wii games are possibly native executed, sources have leaked Wii U is using 3 enhanced Broadway cores.

In case you didn't catch the Japanese stream, the Internet browser has
- Tabbed browsing
- Video codecs from browser (you can now play videos straight from the browser including YouTube)
- Mainly controlled by GamePad. What you see on the TV is undisturbed and just the webpage
- Surf independently on GamePad
- Google Maps support
- Play video on TV, but continue surfing the web on GamePad when YouTube is active.
- Scroll via Gyro
- Curtains
- Game screenshots

Sorry if this has been posted.
