I wonder how much the japanese developers made off of let these two games to get localized because even if they didn't do well in Japan you would think since it did extremely well overseas that alone should be good enough reason to make more because contrary to what many people in Japan may think about likes, taste and what not the world does not revolve around them. Another good example of a game that sold poorly in Japan but extremely well outside of Japan was Ni No Kuni.
Japanese publishers will not fund a game that will not do well in Japan because they're Japanese publishers, not international.

I know what they are doing, they are doing what some people would call being patriotic, while other would call it way to flush a really good idea down the toilet. While I am someone who understands both points of views but tends to lean more towards the thing that makes the most business sense.

...No. Let's say you are a company that publishes games in Japan and NOWHERE ELSE because that is not your job. Would you really fund a game that is all but guaranteed to flop in the only place where you can distribute it, ie Japan just so that another company can pick it up and potentially profit from it? This is not patriotism, this is business.

That is why I in my first statement I asked how much money they made from localization. From there I was just speculating I honestly don't know if it was a too little making them not want to make another one because it would not be profitable, or they are making a lot of more which would make this situation more of a patriotic one. Yes if they make next to nothing to localize a game of course I can understand why they would not make another one it is does not make good business sense.

I'm playing danganronpa right now but am not far enough to compare it with 999/VLR.
They should remaster Never7 and Ever17 and release them as a compilation. I'm sure the 360 was meant to get a port of them a couple of years ago but only in Japan.
A proper Never7 and Ever17 would be great. The translation of Ever17 had a crapton of errors, some of which were super long text which got cut off. With Never7, there's a bug where you can't get one or two of the endings, so I never actually finished every route, and the route(s) that I didn't finish were quite possibly the most important (the Cure ones). I would love a proper release of those games. Unfortunately, visual novels don't seem to do that well in our CoD, let's-shoot-things-with-guns atmosphere in the West.

Same here. I finished chapter 1 and it's a bit like Ace Attorney meets VLR with a grain of crazy and a soundtrack that doesn't really fit in the whole despair thing.

I know right it's like club music or techno weirdness. It's also really slow to get going but I'm starting to get into it now.
The text boxes and antagonist remind me of Persona 4 too much as well.

Ni no Kuni sold very well in Japan... on the DS. If the PS3 version didn't sell as many copies, it's likely because everyone who wanted to play it had already played it on the DS a year earlier.
