I owned at least one system from each generation when they were current gen (ie, before they were retro), and most of them I still own.
The last system I got (that I didn't have when it was current) was Sega Dreamcast, but even when I got that I wouldn't have been able to describe it as retro

This kind of thing was my first retro console:

Not this exact model but the closest I can find now. It was from a different series, the default controllers also were less colorful like this but in general it was like that.
Unfortunately its now all gone or maybe seized as artifacts from different dimension by the secret government?

A Sega Master System. I had a portable Game & Watch clone before that but having a single game it doesn't count as a videogame console. I played my brick Gameboy a whole lot more due to being portable and getting games for about a decade. Yes the mayority of GBC games work on the old brick Gameboy unless they are GBC exclusive.

My first retro console was the Atari 7800. The first console that I loved was the NES, though. The NES was my second console, and I played it for thousands of hours. Probably have 100 hours into Mario 1 and 200-300 into Mario 3. Fell in love with JRPGs on the NES too. Dragon Warrior 1 was my first, and 3 was my second. DW3 for the NES is still one of my favorite games to this day. I prefer the NES version to the SNES version; there is something about the boomerangs and whips that turned me off of the SNES version. Amazing graphics compared to the NES version, though.

Nintendo 64 back in 2020 or 2021. It's still to this day a great console and I purchased Super Mario 64 yesterday to experience the game that innovated platformers. Does the Hyperkin RetroN 5 also count?

Super Nintendo classic. I was not able to secure on launch day. I did not buy one right away. Then I heard about clones. I did a lot of research. I was able to find a legit one on ebay and install Hakashi and mod it and finally play Super mario World as intended.

well.. I'm really old now so.... So please don't laugh (too loud...) of my first console.
My first console was an Hanimex Electronics Console (orange model).
It's really ... from a "prehistoric era", I'm afraid. It's my father during a professional trip to USA, who offered me my first console.
I never stopped playing / or collecting consoles. Only one console I missed was the wonderswan color....

If you are curious about Hanimex Electronics Console, there is a page and a photo of this console :
