Bear with me as I'm kinda technologically challenged these days.

I soft modded my Wii about ten years ago using the forums and tutorials on wiiso but looks like that site has now closed its doors.

Fast forward ten years later ...the wii has been in a closet for the last 5 years ...kids took it out and dropped the harddrive that had all the games on it and broke it, okay no problem I have another 1TB harddrive (Western Digital Elementis ) and all the games backed up ...format a 32gb partition and format it FAT32 and use WIIBackupManager to put the games on and create a WBFS folder.

Fire up the WII and plug USB drive into outter most USB port and click USB Loader GX, it loads for a second and shows 12 Wii symbols then throws me back to the homescreen. Tried CFG Loader as well and does same thing.

The Wii is 4.3.

Not sure where to go from here ....thank you so much for anyone's time in walking an old guy through how to fix for the grand kids lol

I'm currently reading the entire "the-ultimate-nintendo-wii-hacking-guide-for-seniors" HA! to see where I can try to update the usb loader maybe

12 wii symbol? not sure what you mean.
how do you launch the loader? from HBC or from a channel located on your system menu? (it might be the forwarder, but it only forward to the actual program located on SD. if it's not on SD it will not load anything and return to system menu)

you need to put the application in sd:/apps/ folder

it might also be a good idea to check what you currently have and see if you need to update anything.
look at the "syscheck" guide linked in my signature, follow it and post the result here.
then we will help you more.

I'll make a suggestion based on my recent frustrations setting up the Wii (I used Wii for Seniors also):

Try more than one hard drive. I had multiple 2.5" HDD's. I verified everything worked well with a 128GB drive, it worked, then said "Let's go!" and copied a bunch of games onto a 300GB drive. Hooked up the 300GB drive and nothing worked right. I spent several days screwing around with it only to find out that it was the 300GB hard drive that wasn't compatible. Same USB adapter, same file type (I used NTFS), same directory structure / game files, and the 300GB drive didn't work. If it works for one and not the other, you know it is the drive.

Thank you both.

I put the most recent version of USBloaderGX on a SD card along with syscheck and installed them with Homebrew.

USBloaderGX now seems to be working properly and the settings tab is viewable now and it is looking for a hard drive and counts down from 20 but does not find the harddrive (the USB port puts power to the Harddrive but does not seem to read it).

Syscheck on the other hand seems to go through its process and then crashes the Wii everytime it gets to the end.

It did create a excel file on the SD card but all it reads is the following

"sysCheck v1.6.2 by Erik Spyder

Region: NTSC-U
The system menu v513 is running under IOS58 (rev 6176)
Hollywood v0x21
Console ID: 152541310
Boot2 v4
Found 259 titles
Found 34 IOS on this console
Found 13 IOS Stubs on this console"

Will usbloaderGX read games from the SD card if I chose to put them on there opposed to a HD?

be sure to plug your drive in bottom port.

your syscheck is only that?
it's missing the actual check for all your system files and version.

USBGX can only play gamecube games or wiiware/VC from SD. not wii games.
wiiflow and config loader can.

Good news bad news.

I downloaded Hackdens syscheck and it worked. Also good news ...I downloaded and installed Wiiflow loader and it read the harddrive and booted the couple games i had on there.

So it seems like USBloaderGX may be the issue somehow.

the most important part is these two lines :

IOS249[56] (rev 21006, Info: d2x-v6): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
IOS250[57] (rev 21006, Info: d2x-v6): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0

your slot249 and 250 are using cIOS d2x v6 (outdated), based on IOS 56 and 57 (good).

I recommend to update to either d2x v8, or v10 r52 (NOT r53!).
v8 and v10 (r52) are exactly the same cIOS.
v10-alternative (r53) is beta and not working properly.

since v6, you'll have lot of game fixes and better compatibility, for example all wiimote+ (zelda skyward sword, red steel 2, etc.) or "chapter" games (metroid prime trilogy, sam&max, etc.)

full d2x pack for Wii

run the installer from a network capable wii (it'll get files from nintendo's servers).
select :
- v10r52
- slot249
- base56
-version: 21010

press button to install, when succesful do the same with slot 250 and base57 instead.

Some game require base57, some require base56. you'll base to change the game settings in the loader to set which slot to use.
https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Wii_cIOS_base_Compatibility_List#IOS_Slots

If you want USBLoaderGX, you can try to change the IOS too:
loader's settings > Loader's IOS : 58 or one of the cIOS slot (249 or 250)
try both, reboot to see HDD is recognized.
usually, problematic HDD works only with IOS58.
Attention, with IOS58 both USB Ports are working, but you still need to plug the drive in Port0 for Wii games. (gamecube games work in either ports)
