VLC - Pros: Great compatibility, no external codecs.
Cons: In most cases, newer encodes seem to break. If at all, run. And if it does, it's very laggy. Also, it uses a fuckton of memory being idle.

Suggestion:

Media Player Classic, and CCCP codec pack. Although, you don't necessarily need all the codecs, you might as well.

Zoom Player is good as well, but it'll be a bitch to some newer H.264 encodes and especially the 720p versions.

Well, if the above unmissable mentions of codecs and media players dont work, just try upping its priority.

Press Control-Alt-Delete, and go to the processes list, find it and right click it. Then Set Priority, and try something a bit higher.

Get more RAM, get VLC media player, do NOT get any of these others, and do also as xJonny says, set VLC to have a higher priority. It would be alot easier to help if you had posted your system specs.

Of course, instead of getting new versions of codecs and trying a new media player, spend money on new RAM.

BTW - Anon is even more hypocritical than those it attacks.
