WoW but not so expensive?

I've kinda wanted to get into WoW as it's probably still the biggest MMORPG, but there's absolutely no way I can justify spending $18/month on a subscription in addition to $70 de-facto mandatory DLCs.

I've heard of private servers existing. Would there be one that's as close to the original but, well, without the high monetary investments?

Most private servers end up being free, so most of them have no monetary investment at all (unless you want to donate ).

Your best bet would be to check for "Blizzlike" servers. Not sure what expansion you want to start with, I prefer WOTLK myself so my recommendation is WoW-Mania.
