Couldn't you make it so the Wii could be hacked from the USB port, like a Flashcart rather than soldering a piece onto the DVD drive?
Or would this require you to break the Wii encryption?

The USB ports aren't even active (not the same as powered) unless the Wii firmware is expecting input through them, so I doubt it
Technically, they are active during the Internet channel with the new firmware that allows USB keyboard to work.
So, if you could make an exploit allowing access via Internet channel, it could work.
But there poses the question: "Do you need to break the Wii encryption".

This question gets asked so often it's not even funny. It's not going to happen. Buck up and find someone that can solder.

to "hack" the Wii you must find a way to let the console load the images the way they are put on a normal DVD.
If you take some time and search the web you might find, that the information on Wii-Discs is saved differently than on ordinary DVDS. To load the data, the Wii-Drive supports some special commands. These commands are not available if you put in a non-Wii-Media (aka. ordinary DVD).
Actual Mods allow the drive to perform these special commands even if a non-Wii-Media is inserted and hence play the game.
Of course, this is a small break down of how it is supposed to work.
Now if you want to perform all this through the USB you need some things:
- The USB Ports are active and receive-ready
- you can and are allowed to alter the console configuration from the USB-Client (if you plug in some USB-Device it is a client an the PC, Hub or in this case the Wii is the Host)
[Btw: USB uses polling, this means the Master/Host asks the client if there is something to say]
or
- a completely new approach to hacking the wii.

I am optimist and would not say it is impossible, but I real don't think this is gonna happen, even IF it is technically possible.

I can think of 100s of dodgy keyboard presses that would cause the Wii to flip out and start loading isos through it.

...

Actually, I can't.

A keyboard driver is too simple to even be exploited. Really, all it needs to do is listen to the device on the USB port, and if the bit patterns being sent through they port translate to characters, then print them on the screen.

I understand that it only reads keyboard presses and such. I'm not saying to use the keyboard or anything.
It's a USB driver, it just can use the keyboard.
I'm saying, what if someone cracked the Wii's encryption and could make a way to allow Homebrew, ISOs and such to load through the Wii like a Flashcart.

I understand it probably won't happen/is impossible, but it's just a simple question :/
