Windows 8 upgrade freezes when upgrading

so i am a college student and i get to use the free windows 8 upgrade from msdn agreement so i have the official version and a real product key i have tried three times on my laptop to upgrade to windows 8 and everytime it gets to the its ready to load so its gone through the process of getting devices and other files ready it freezes at around 50% so i turn off my computer and the system reverts me back to before i tried upgrading to windows 8 there are no error logs for this issue i have checked all three times doesnt give me a reason as to why it wont upgrade im trying to do the way of keeping my programs so i dont lose them and have to reinstall them anyone know of why this keeps happening?

Try disabling all startup programs, and temporarily uninstalling any AV/firewall/security software since they tend to hook into the kernel.
