well i read your `wall of text`, and i notice this is going to be an argument i don`t want to have.

The first card i ever bought was an R4i Gold. Instead, i got shipped an Acekard Clone, that only works with Akaio 1.8.1.
I bought another R4, this time, something wood compatible. This was a much better experience overall, but still, i could not use the card to play new games.

Now if a noobie comes to this site, and reads your recomendation of buying an R4, he will go out and buy the next best thing with R4 somethign on it. And that is the only thing that really bugs me. As a little knowing beginner in the FC buisness, i would never recommend anybody to buy an R4. It`s that simple really. Sure, i can recommend someone to buy an Acekard and he goes and buys a fake. But what do you think is more likely?

I still think that R4 is the most abused name, and you are best off steering clear of anything with R4 on it. As a matter of fact, go to linfoxdomain.com and see how many different R4 products there are. If anybody were to buy any of these, do you think they would have a good experience?

1. That's why you buy from a reliable source.
2. You should be able to play the newest games with a Wood-compatible R4...so long as you're using the Wood firmware.
3. That's why you link to the R4 and say "This is the only R4 you should ever consider" or something along the lines of that.
4. My point about Normmatt still stands. What would happen if he quits? Then your Acekard will become a worthless piece of junk.
5. The "fake Acekard" is actually the AK team's own fault. They sold an older design of the AK2i, and the other party decided to exploit the situation and sell fake AK2is.
6. Again, if you had a reliable source, you wouldn't get a fake Acekard.
7. That's only because of the success of the original R4. I know there's hundreds of different R4s, but if you educate the n00bs on the topic, they should be able to pick the right one.

The only reason that I'm suggesting the R4i Gold is because the OP is strapped on cash. If the OP didn't care about price, then I would suggest the DStwo in a heartbeat.

Yaymii, your logic doesnt make much sense. yes its true acekard is mantained by normatt, but its just because why would the acekard team make a firmware if akaio is really good. besides, acekard team helps normatt with the firmware. and your r4i gold is also mantained by a fan made firmware which is wood and can leave any time aswell. if normmat leaves, the acekard team would continue updating the card and akaio has the AAP feature that has been really useful so far with games.

it doesnt matter if its fan made or not. look at the edge team, they suck at keeping their updates and its their original firmware. so it can actually happen to any card that they stop being updated.

wood lacks many of the features akaio has, thus making acekard the better choice of card

not everyone is going to spend $30 on a flashcart and YWG and Retro are doing fine.

Normmatt has said in the past that if people complain about the speed of the updates (which is inevitable, since Normmatt is a perfectionist), that he would stop working on AKAIO. And the Acekard team isn't helping him that much (except in some instances, like when Acekard accidentally put out new AK2i hardware before it was supported), so if he quit, then the Acekard would be as dead as a lot of clone R4s out there. Wood is newer than AKAIO, and both are based off of the Acekard RPG firmware, so you can't really complain about the lacking features.
In addition, YWG didn't say anything about quitting, so that suggests that he's here to stay. And I don't have an R4i Gold, so why are you saying "your"? I already said I have a DStwo, and would rather suggest that if someone had a more relaxed budget.

BTW, I used to own an EDGE. And no, it's not original firmware, and it's pretty much a budget CycloDS without a lot of the features. I noticed the slow updates when the R4 clones started to arrive (because when I got the EDGE, they updated the firmware really frequently). So I'm assuming that all the small piracy-stores in Asia that sold the EDGE began to switch them out with R4 clones, knowing that more people recognize the R4 name and thus increasing their profit. So I guess the fall of the EDGE's sales is what limited their motivation to update the card.

well, retrogamefan has complained in the past aswell (no offense) and you still see him doing an excellent job. just because someone complains doenst mean they will leave. and acekard actually helps alot in the support of akaio. i dont know if you heard but acekard gave akaio the codes (or whatever is called) for the bypass AP feature (which is something wood doesnt have)

Well, I haven't used my Acekard in a while so I didn't know that. But still, who needs it when you get updates fairly quickly anyway?

Acekard users can play practically any game with AP whereas Wood users have to wait for an update.

@Elvarg you're kidding me right?
Well, it doesn't really matter if you're patient. There's an update within a week of a major release anyways.

And yes, people have completely ridiculous budgets. They want to spend as little as possible in order to pirate games.
