The switch is far too big and heavy, it's also more of a home console. I hope valve will make a steamdeck lite with this year's hardware when they roll out the steamdeck 2

Microsoft is supposedly making a handheld Windows, but as far as console makers I think Nintendo just flat out owns that market. Sony made a beautiful handheld in the Vita but didn't bother to support it with first party titles, and now they just have the Portal which let's you play your PS5 on the go they probably think that's good enough.

As far as what you're asking for another pocket sized handheld, it won't be from any of the big 3 console makers. Probably just more phone/gaming hybrids to play mobile games which I have zero interest in.

Switch doesn't count, it never did.
The rule of thumb is If you need a BAG to carry a console then it's NOT portable.
"But you can take it with you!" So you can take laptop or heck, you can take whole freaking PC if you try hard enough. Does it make them portable? Nope, not even in an infinity amount of years.

Back to the topic, 3DS and Vita are currently last "official" (TM) portable consoles.
You can try to look at alternate solutions that either remake one console - probably with FPGA - so it will be like "fresh new air" or something in a new form, OR projects that usually emulate a few consoles (for example GB, GBC, GBA in one "package").

Besides that I wouldn't count on it. Big corporations want to make us believe that console connected to the network 24/7 so they can spy on is "perfectly normal" so a handheld which wouldn't have to be connected like that is against their agenda.
That and probably some other minor and major reasons, perhaps financial somehow.

Unfortunately The Market has decided that a truly pocketable (portable) console is too small and cramped to play on, so It's not likely. People want a 6-7'' screen to fit all that HD goodness, and you have to add decent sized controls on it, with analog sticks and all the triggers, and it just adds to the bulk.

There are some tiny handhelds out there, but they are only suited for retro gaming.

Yes and it's probably already in your pocket. Your phone. If you don't have the budget for X64 architecture gaming such as steam then emulation is your next best friend. But no buttons? Bluetooth controller will be your next best friend. Just think that most these portables are a fork of Linux and you guessed it android is based on Linux. Anything from the past 3 years should be good enough for 3ds and some switch up to ps2. Like it or not that's all these portables use some fork of Android, slapped with a controller. If I was dirt broke this would be my set up but I got into the portable market for the fun of it.
When we get to pocketable devices we're talking the same screen size as a phone anyway so unless you get a call every hour on the hour makes no difference.

If the rumors for a Xbox portable are true it'll feel so nice to see a new os but it'll probably be a stripped down version of windows 11 anyway. So when we talk about portables it all depends on your budget and wants. Say you can go from a Odin 2 mini vita like device for $300 to a gpd win max for $1,000.

That's not entirely true - they just decided not to compete with mobile phones, which are technically the only current, true, portable gaming device... although, for the most part, the gaming eco-system on mobile still falls extremely short of 3DS and Vita - the last true portable consoles.

If you want something pocketable then the Ayn Odin 2 Mini is really one of the only good choices on the market. It's android based and about the size of a Vita. Though you're basically also only getting a phone with built in controls so getting a gamepad or gaming clip for your current phone might be the more economical choice.

Beyond that GPD makes a bunch of tiny x86 laptops and gaming stuff that might be worth looking at, but they're also expensive and definitely stretch "pocketable" unless you only wear cargo pants / shorts.

For everything else you'd basically want a messenger bag to throw that crap in there, and then just lug that around. Those would naturally have the benefit you can also grab a spare powerbank, water, and an emergency snack like an entire rotisserie chicken or Döner Kebab with you.
You never know when the munchies will hit.

What I mean is, people want and expect a 6'' screen on their device, for two reasons: phones are that size, and modern games are in high resolution and with tons of detail. All the high-end handhelds, that came out in recent years (gaming PCs, Android-based handhelds) have screens of this size, and when the Retroid Pocket Mini came out with a 4'' screen the main and major complaint was that it's way too small for modern games that the rest of the hardware actually supports ("overpowered for its size" was the comment). 6'' is the minimum that a portable console is expected to have these days. Add a comfortable gamepad and pocketability goes out the window.
