USB 3.0/eSATA begs to differ. And it wouldn't be always on.

too bad everything Nintendo has told us so far says "4 USB 2.0 ports"

usb 2.0 reads at 35MB/s if i've done my homework whereas BD at 8x hits 36 MB/s, further research suggests a 'theoretical' 12x at 54... so maybe usb 2.0 is all that's really going to be necessary

It is good enough if everything were loaded from the discs, but one thing the PS3/X360 could do with their internal drives were to install the more common assets of the games to it for much faster data access/transfer. That allowed for shorter load times. The WiiU has at least double the RAM than both of those, even after allocating the 500MB for the OS, and if it is transferring at 35MB/s, then we might expect some long load times.
