If the 360 didn't have such an awful design problem, I would have bought that instead of a Wii, which so far has left me wanting one of the other two consoles. 360 is the machine to own right now if you're a gamer, with the Wii you get expected updates of known franchises, and little in the way of games that make interesting use of the Wiimote.

I don't know why the wii is selling so well.  Apart from wii sports and 1 or 2 other games, its not got anything on it thats worth playing.

These are just a couple off the top of my head, i easily could name some more, but im to lazy

Also in regards to a shortage, it would only seem the USA has this problem. Yesterday at my wife's work, Kmart, they got around 25 Wii's and they sold out right after opening, I guess people heard they had them in stock and there was about 15-20 people in line before the store opened at 7am, this was Thanksgiving Day, not today.
