I found a repository containing a port of Linux kernel v4.4 to wii-linux-ngx.
Found two (seemingly) identical copies, not sure which one is the proper one:
ThatsItForTheOtherOne/wii-linux-ngx/tree/v4.4
techflashYT/wii-linux-ngx/tree/v4.4
(both on GitHub)

The default 3.x kernel that is included with wii-linux-ngx has mouse support completely broken, making the X windowing support pretty much pointless. Seems that it got fixed with v4.4.

Unfortunately I can't actually test it because the maintainer has posted neither binaries nor compiling instructions.

So if ThatsItForTheOtherOne or techflashYT or anyone else who has some experience with Linux on wii can help me a bit to get this running I'd really appreciate it.

You might wanna go with compiling your own build, however, you need a really old release of devkitPro. Go with one that was released around the same date that the repository was updated.

I actually managed to natively compile it on the Wii itself. The problem is for some reason it can't find the root partition and hangs on startup.
