Hacking Wii Homebrew Without Wii Mode ?

Is it possible to run homebrew intended for Wii on the Wii U without going into the Wii Homebrew Channel first?

I'm mainly interested in the Sega emulator "Genesis_Plus_GX". I've tried using doltool to convert the emu from .dol to .elf. It showed up in Homebrew Browser, but launching failed without error after the progress bar filled.

Sure, you can use forwarder channels. Make sure the forwarder channel is made for vWii though, as ones made for Wii won't work.

If you're thinking of running it without entering the Wii Mode at all (i.e in Wii U mode), there isn't a way of doing that right now.
You can avoid the HBC as mentioned above, however.
