Yep... you're right. For VBA GX, FCE GX and SNES GX ( all from the same author ) it's best to set the start directory to USB (to load the games from there) and to set the save dir to SD (for storing SRAM and savestates), then everything runs fine. Thanks.

Just performed Checkdisk. It said there were numerous errors Windows could not fix. It made all sorts of changes but my roughly 700GB of information is now being reported as 18.2GB and is just more gibberish (not the same as in the image above). I'd say its completely screwed as far as data recovery goes. That is fine, nothing I can't replace. Just not sure if I want to use this drive anymore.

The sad thing is I was using this drive for two years for data storage without a single problem. Lots of regular read/write operations on a weekly basis. Then I use it for the Wii and this happens. Now I'm afraid to go back to using it for data. I'll go ahead and format it, run tests and diagnostics, and see where I'm at. Thank you all so very much for your help. I sincerely appreciate it. You are awesome!

An HDD that suddenly dies is always suspect, I can agree with that. Random corruption is rare, but it does happen sometimes and the best you can do is nuke the drive, re-scan it and get on with your life. If Windows still reports unfixable errors despite a low-level format, there's something wrong with the thing. I'm sorry that you weren't able to recover any data, but glad that it was replacable. Be sure to always back up your data from removable storage - you never know what's gonna happen.

I don't understand why people cannot put their apps on a SD card, they are only a few MB per app. Compatibility is far better when using an SD card. The only thing I use the usb hdd for is for ISO and emuNAND/wiiware.

I personally don't own an SD card bigger than 1 gig. I don't even have an SD card reader that supports cards over 2GB. So for me USB is very accessible, while SD cards are not. One of the reasons I haven't gone out of my way to buy an SD card is I was under the notion that SD cards are slower. Loading anything onto this 1GB card takes forever, for example.

Well chkdsk found no errors after I reformatted it. S.M.A.R.T. status is still perfect and I'm running a scan on it right now. I wasn't able to do anything with HDDScan because, I assume, my HD is connected via SATA. It can't pull any info on it. A buddy of mine has a program called Hard Disk Sentinel which seems very robust. It says "The hard disk status is PERFECT. Problematic or weak sectors were not found and there are no spin up or data transfer errors."

I'll be using it to run an Extended Self-test, Random Seek test, and Surface test. Going to take most of the day I imagine. Thank you again for all of your help and feedback Foxi4. I sincerely appreciate it .

After considering what SickPuppy had to say about operating off just an SD card, I have decided to clean up this USB drive and only use it for storing my Wii games. I'll be moving to an SD card and I hope this proves to be a more stable solution, especially concerning my recent emu save state experiences with freezing. Thank you SickPuppy for mentioning this type of setup .
