An update from Nintendo wont brick your wii, a modchip cant brick your wii, its things people do that will brick your wii
e.g. banner bricking
semi bricking with updating other region games etc.

You can always update thru the Wii Settings, but if you want to NOT update, well......you can Brick Block your games before burning them, or launch them with GeckOS to jump the update

Updates from your own region are always safe. (ie, NTSC-U for USA).

Updates from other regions are dangerous if they are newer than the version you're running. You can brick or semi-brick by running them. If the version on the disc is older or the same as what you're running, you'll get duplicate news/weather channels.

The big mod chips at the moment... wasabi, wiikey2, d2pro all have update blockers which block updates from other regions but allow them for your own. It's pretty handy!
