Do you hear noise from the optical drive moving around when you turn the Wii on? Or is it silent? Is there any disc in the drive?

Yes I do. When it starts up you can hear it do its' "scan" (if thats what you want to call it)

Hmm probably check the clock battery inside the wii. It might have gone out though I'm not sure what would be the effect of that.

The clock battery? I havent disassembled a Wii before, but have built many PCs in my time. Would this be the flat cell battery on a motherboard?

It's actually very accessible. Below your wii, there's a small door secured by a screw. Just open that and the battery compartment will pop out.

No worries, and good job there.

Before modding I'd try replacing the flat cell as suggested by ertaboy356b.

Replaced the clock battery. No effect unfortunately
