Hacking Wii Achievements?

Achievements are horrible.
Nintendo is having enough trouble as it is in the games area, like they need to do useless rubbish like Achievements (*ding* you've killed 5 people! you dont really get anything to improve your game, but here's a flashy gold bar and a ringing sound!!! dont you feel SPECIAL!!!). Something like this makes me glade Nintendo doesn't catch onto all the latest gaming fads like the other consoles do because MS/Sony lack original ideas.
I knew this kind of person would show up. The reason I like acheivements is because I love to reflect upon my mile stones, such as beating Halo 3 on Legendary, not such an easy feat, so I like it to be recognised.

Quite honestly, I expected it too upon thread creation. I, too, like achievements for completing my goals. I also like them for the fact that they give replay value and allow me to get more out of my game, going out of my way to do something I normally wouldn't do in the game.

EDIT: We could argue this until time stops--there's really no point in arguing it as far as I see. It has potential, but it's not a priority to the scene; it's just whether somebody is willing to take the time to carry it out.

You really must have a bad memory if you can't remember what you have or what you have not done in a game. Last time I checked, playing games a hard way or on a hard mode didn't require epeen so you can spam it to all buddies or people you hate and say "look ive done the game THIS way! SO SHAME!!!"

Achievements are there for companies to increase replay value so they can sell less content at an increased price. No doubt not all games abuse Achievements, but at the same time, not all games need achievements.

And there are always people like me, because there are always people that know how crappy achievements are.

Anyway, last time I checked, Halo 3 offline was pathetic, so gratz, by doing the legendary achievement you have been scammed into doing bad content for a longer period that was needed. Again, Achievements are a lazy reason to not include more actual content.

Honestly if you don't like achievements your opinion is irrelevant so GTFO. Allot of people didn't think it would work with the 360.and it did. If you suddenly took them away so many would complain. That is why the ps3 copied them after all. Here's an idea to simplify this a bit.

Make it a homebrew app with a customizable GUI that would allow anyway to add their own achievements and set pictures to each one. Or the person who creates the code to have their official achievements selectable. Of course people could lie but really your mostly lying to yourself. Allow the ability to create a jpg of your achievements to post online or elsewhere. Or allow to send through a mail client to friends.

I will admit, 6 months ago I would have protested achievements but I got a 360 a couple of months ago and it is fun to get achievements. It does add a certain replay value and if they are implemented correctly, cause you to play the game or approach situations in a variety of different ways.

In theory, couldn't you just have a program that reads your save files and tells you what you have accomplished? I know that this isn't the same really, but it would work. As long as people could find save files that have certain parts of the game unlocked (it would probably have to be story-related, though, or something that is actually saved) and other parts unlocked, they could put all of said save files into a program that would read yours and compare, then list what "trophies" or "achievements" you have done. It would take work and not actually get done since most people don't care, but it is possible.
Although this is probably the most plausible idea, i doubt it would work. This is mainly because save games are too..native to the game, i guess. It's not like they follow a strict format (correct me if i am wrong). Each game company's game's save stores different information, this is why save games fluxiate in size. Unless some people took the effort to
a) copy the saves to computer (it has to be decrypted already so using waninkoko's save game extractor)
b) interpret the information stored in them (harder than it sounds)
c) write a script which can read this data when it is decrypted
d) repeat for every wii game wanted and region since some values may differ.

anyone feel free to correct me where i am wrong

also, the 'shell' idea wouldnt work either. even with bootmii it would be a stretch. Once the game is running, it is running with all it's own code. nothing else. Even the home menu is built into each game.

Achivements are just pointless and pathetic, created by game companies so you play their games for longer. Honestly I find the whole premise of it just stupid and some of them are just psychotic and push a person to the limit for nothing.

I think a community project for people who wanted to take part could compile an app and call it trophy room or something similar and have it run over wifi to scan for certain variables in game saves in your wii's memory to see if players completed certain things and it could be delegated to different people for certain tasks but i think a good way to choose new achievements would be on a rating of fun or stupid based on a polling system.

I don't know a line of coding myself but i think a good plan of attack would be some type of identifier and base everything off of an xml format like homebrew channel does for homebrew displays to keep things basic and sort and scan by gameid like usbloader does.

I have a usbgecko that i bought just to fuck around with, but if anyone is interested in this project and wants some memory dumps for any of the games i have doing before/after sequences, I'd be happy to help since I have plenty of free time now.

just figured i'd throw something out there other than negative remarks or trolling even though i thought it wasn't something I'd use, but the more i thought about it with enough people involved, i would use it and i think a lot of others would too. Just look at the gbatemp cheat database for every ds flash card out there.

This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard... Almost anybody I know would be grateful for a game that has a longer lifespan. The more you played a game the more you got out of it even if it is just spending a couple more hours on achievement points. Now I will say this people who go out of their way to get a retarded amount of achievement points are stupid like this one time in gamestop some guy was trading in like 5 really gay shovelware games and getting like 3 more bragging about how he had over 200000 360 achievement points. I kinda wanted to make fun of him asking how much were from barbie games and such(he was mid 20s)
