Today, the Wi-Fi Alliance launched Wi-Fi Direct.
Wi-Fi Direct is a technology used to connect two (or maybe more) devices without using an access point.
Do you think this may be used in 3DS?

So it's WiFi bluetooth?

That's, indeed, pretty similar to ad-hoc. We use it all the time at school to connect our laptop's to play some lan game.
 
Sometimes it surprised me that things more direct like this didn't already exist (specifically for WiFi, there are other direct methods as mentioned already).
 
Err... The DS already uses a modified WiFi protocal to do this already... I don't see what the big deal is here.

The only thing that this announcement seems to do is name a standardized method to do this... IE: An easier way amongst supported devices.
