Many people could avoid wrong update with a video showing step by step. Youtube have only one user who explain a little about the update way. Gateway team forgot this?

Anyway, i want know if without the emunand i can play the same roms or if I will need do it to play any roms in the future. Because so far the unique reason to risk try create a emunand to me is the ability to play the two new original games, and i don´t want to play these ones.

If you are one of those people that does not enable WiFi on their 3DS to avoid system updates and prompts, you are going to need to enable it long enough somewhere your 3DS has an internet connection for the update to be downloaded. DO NOT UPDATE FROM THE PROMPT, USE IT ONLY AS AN INDICATION THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY DOWNLOADED THE UPDATE. If you have not been nagged at some point about a new system update your not ready to go, or at the minimum you will have to leave WiFi on in step 9, which may be dangerous but I'm not sure why.

IF YOU GET A PROMPT TO UPDATE AT ANY POINT DURING THESE STEPS DO NOT ACCEPT IT.

    1. Back up your 3DS's SD to your computer. If you have not copied the "Launcher.dat" file from the Gatway 2.0 distribution to your SD yet, do so now, overwrite any old Loader.bin files if present
    2. Put the SD back in your 3DS
    3. Start Gateway mode while holding down the left shoulder button
    4. At the menu shift all the way to the right and select "FORMAT EMUNAND", hit start and wait until it finishes (my 8GB SD took around 10 minutes, I think (wasn't really paying attention or watching a clock))
    5. At the menu again shift back two icons to "BACK UP SYSTEM NAND" and select it, hit start and wait until it finishes (again around 10 minutes)
    6. Power down your 3DS and remove the SD, back up the "NAND.BIN" file that's on it to your computer
    7. If the 3DS created a folder on your SD named "Nintendo 3DS" delete it, then put the files back from step 1 on to your SD... DO NOT JUST OVERWRITE THE "NEW" NINTENDO 3DS FOLDER ON THE SD W/ THE OLD BACK UP, DELETE IT FIRST! Make sure the "Launcher.dat" file from the GW 2.0b distro is present in the root of your SD. I left the NAND.BIN file on my SD, but I don't think you need to, the NAND backup GW mode uses is on a partition of it's own, I believe, the file is just there to make it easy for you to back it up
    8. Put the SD back in your 3DS
    9. Power on and disable WiFi. Removing your connection settings isn't really required, I think GW are just being overly cautious, but if you feel the need to remove your connection settings do it now
    10. Enter GW mode (no need to hold the L button)
    11. Enter "System Settings" and look for the "GW3D" in front of your system version at the bottom right corner of the top screen. If it's not there restart GW mode (you should be able to do it from here w/o reinstalling the blue cart exploit)

IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE "GW3D" IN FRONT OF YOUR SYSTEM VERSION DO NOT CONTINUE. DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE IN THE SYSTEM MENU OR LEAVE IT OR YOU RISK LEAVING GW MODE (this is where most people screw up it seems)

    12. Enter "Other Settings", scroll right to the last page and select "System Update"... And then update

ONLY EVER UPDATE VIA STEPS 10 - 12. DO NOT UPDATE FROM A PROMPT FROM THE 3DS'S MAIN MENU OR VIA A GAME CARTRIDGE, EVEN IF YOUR ARE ON EMUNAND.

Does that help, or do we still need a blurry video commentated by the usual YouTube dumb ass?

The only problems I've seen people have with the process is that they didn't read the instructions at all or even attempt to.

    3) Update your emuNAND partition. Boot into Gateway mode, and enter into the System Settings application. CHECK to make sure you see the letters GW3D before the system version located in the bottom right hand corner of the top screen. If you only see a version number "Ver." please exit and perform step 2 again. With the "GW3D" X.XX.X version number verified proceed to update the console by going to Other Settings and scroll right to the last page and press the System Update button.

IMPORTANT !! .. ONLY ever update through System Settings and ONLY when you have double checked the "GW3D" lettering in front of the system version number !!

Yet there are still people that say "I WENT 2 TEH ESHOP AND UPDATED AND NOW IT UPDATED THE REAL NAND OMG" or "CAN U UPDATE FROM CARTRIDGE?"

It looks pretty clear to me and everyone else who read it.

    A wild 3ds appeared!
    Gateway used 2.0b1 Tutorial
    It's super effective
The Real Nand was been updated!

Does that help, or do you like another game? Maybe a Lego explanation to your age?

I have no idea what the above reference is from. Well, not the Lego though... I know what Legos are, been playing w/ them since the 80's.

I'm sorry you feel attacked, but I made that quick tutorial in earnest. If you (or anyone else) follows it, you will succeed in updating your emuNAND and not your "real" NAND. In my experience most tutorial videos on this sort of thing are complete garbage and only further confuse the issue or make the viewer skip to further frames in the video because they show things the viewer does not need to see (I know how to create a folder on my desktop and then copy files from one another device into it, thank you)... Then come to find out those frames you skipped had commentary that had a critical element to the process.

Or are you angry that we didn't answer your question about the "need" to update your emuNAND. The short answer is no, not the way you have described it. While you may not be interested in the games that do not work w/o it, it is likely that emuNAND will become required for any releases beyond this point. If you do not embrace the emuNAND concept and do not update it, it is likely that you will never be able to play anything on your GW that did not already work on GW1.2. You will need emuNAND if you want to play any future release... End of line.

Sure. But have the question about the new nintendo updates too. In one side if you install the emunand it could be very useful later, but otherwise nintendo could just update the new games to identify emunand (I think). Anyway have a emunand sounds the better to do. My worry is only about these cases of accidental realnand update and the possibility of a new update before my 3ds arrive. I think who don´t make the emunand now can lose the opportunity. Since sooooo many wrong updates i would became more secure following a video. But i understend your point.

Just dont update atleast not until 2.0 final comes out. You will see people saying "how dumb can you be" etc but truely there is no clear indication that you are not in gwmode when you are updating. Yes you see GW3D on top screen but can that explain how when adding internet connection in emunand also adds in realnand? It doesn't kick you out of gwmode yet if you check realnand it would have the connections. From what I read many people did follow instruction and still screwed up. You need emunand to play retail & eshop right? well from belief that nintendo will block gateway users from eshop 7.0+ that means you would only be able to play retails, and thats sorted to as the gateway team is adding support for pokemon/animal crossing the only games that don't work. And when they add support for those two it will support many upcoming games atleast for few months.

There is no real reason to update to emunand right now, its full of bugs that can make it unable to use gateway in future unless you want to open up your ds to hardware flash. Flashing through hardware doesn't seem hard for xl just need right equipment but your ds will have bits sticking out if you don't tuck all the wires neatly and install a port into the case.

Also you know how people say eshop won't work soon? Well think about this there are people buying games on eshop right now using emunand and they will not be able to play in a month if Nintendo does block. And since the games aren't transferable over consoles thats wasted money.

We don't need a video tutorial because there is no technical skill involved you have to teach by showing it. If people can't follow simple guides, they deserve it and have to learn the hard way.

Because the instructions are clear as day and it's extremely simple?

I hate to say it but if you can't follow those instructions perhaps pirating just isn't for you.

You've gotten far enough as to get to gba temp, made an account, and make a thread, that isn't any less difficult than
Heck even buying a gateway (unless you know a place that sells it locally) is a harder process than getting emunand set up.

Why? Eshop games work whether you're online or not.

Shouldn't you first back up system nand and only after that format emunand ?

I went through this last night so I can understand there being a bit of confusion around it all. I believe the big issue is that people think they're in emuNAND but don't realize that after leaving settings (to confirm they're in emuNAND), they're kicked back to sysNAND and then take upgrades thinking they're still in emuNAND. I'm not sure if GW Team was very clear about that in the instructions. Hell I missed the whole "hold the L button to enter the gateway menu" part the first time around. GW Team is right though, if you follow their instructions about only updating through the settings menu then you'll be fine.

    They made it clear.

IMPORTANT !! .. ONLY ever update through System Settings and ONLY when you have double checked the "GW3D" lettering in front of the system version number !!

If you left system settings and went back in, you would see that the GW3D text is gone and you SHOULD NOT update. If you don't realize that well too bad for you.

No. Format emuNAND will wipe your SD and set up a partition on it for the emuNAND. If you back up your NAND before hand, your backup will be wiped from the SD when you use the format function. Formatting emuNAND is about preparing he SD and has nothing to do w/ your 3DS's internals.

taiguy: From what I have read you are absolutely correct, which is why I posted, "DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE IN THE SYSTEM MENU OR LEAVE IT OR YOU RISK LEAVING GW MODE".

The real key here is to go into "System Menu", look for the GW3D in the bottom corner and then do an update through there. See the GW3D? Proceed to the "Enter "Other Settings", scroll right to the last page and select "System Update" step in my short tutorial... And then update. IF YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE YOU WILL PROBABLY END UP UPDATING YOUR REAL NAND!

And in all seriousness, I do not think that the non-beta version of GW2.0 will be any safer. ROP code is ridiculously hard and they got some amazing shit working using it... If you think they have complete control of the system and can write an idiot proof system you have no idea what they are limited to or what is involved in getting there. If they dummy proof this for everyone they will never be able to port this to 5.x+ or even add features. The amount of time it will take to trap and then write code for every instance of a way to update so that they are all safe will keep them from doing anything but... I mean seriously, do you want their next release to have a change log that says, "You can now update from home menu prompts. Updating from unsafe methods is now blocked... Well most of them anyway. That new game you want to play, home brew and multi-ROM loading are still not implemented/working along w/ all those other features you keep pestering us about."

I'd rather they work on other things, thanks.

You can find a video tutorial to most of the simple things and hacks very more secure than it. But when someone talks about a video tutorial to this procedure the answer is no. You people say don't need while many other people are updating their realnands. Not every gateway owner know this forum and probably many of then will try the homepage tutorial and make the same mistakes already done.

Sounds a little egoist to me, like I´m smart and I will laugh of the people who cant do it.
If this is so easy like you make sounds, none would have any trouble.

I will follow the tutorial, and i belive I will be suceed, but i can´t let think how a video could help other people.

It certainly did help me, KidIce. I've always preferred a clear text tutorial to a video. So much easier to follow. I hadn't done the procedure yet, and although I could have figured it out, your instructions in steps to follow are even clearer than the Gateway readme file. Everything went smoothly. Just a tiny detail... The folder created by the 3DS on the SD card is named "Nintendo 3DS", not "3DS". But that's just nitpicking. Considering I hear that Nintendo are just about to push a new system update, I think it's high time for everyone to do the procedure now, in case the new update doesn't work on emunand. And it's just a good idea overall, just to grab the free dlc for games such as Layton (365 daily puzzles), or the game patches.

Instead of making another thread about this...uh... wow. This is complicated!

I have my Gateway which currently has FW1.2 and a 3DSXL on 4.1. Works fine this way.

So I'm reading the release notes to update to 2.0 beta. 'Hold down L while turning on Gateway mode'. What does that mean? Selecting the 'DS profile' option in Settings? Why don't they use the same terminology throughout? I'm guess that's NOT what it means, because I get no menu. Am I supposed to have already put the new firmware on the mSD? Gah, the documentation for Gateway is a joke! Even the step-by-steps on here aren't miss out on a few steps because they're written by smart people that take certain things for granted and forget that noobs like me need every step detailed. :P Anybody know of an idiots guide? :P

And what is sysNAND and emuNAND? Is the first the systems natural NAND, and the other the hacked emulated one?

At least I can type properly... so that's something.

Then why does the guide say different. I agree with your logic, so did they make a mistake?
