Why choose PSP?

This one line says it all for me. :teach:

Just like I'm dealing with windows right now, with it's almost never ending "New Update. Will Restart during off hours." 😦
Lately.
Don't get me started on all these updates nonsense! Got Final Fantasy 14 for Ps5, on disc. Took a whole night to install, plus some extra hours to update!

I mostly play retro consoles, so it's a few months in between current gen. Everytime I power up any newer console, I'm greeted with a wall of updated. By the time I'm done updating, I don't even want to play anymore.

And let's not forget updates breaking things...

I feel the Vita didn't live up to expectations. Very few memorable games for me

I'm having a portable existential gaming crisis.

In this thread please tell me why you still appreciate and play your PSP, despite it being a 20 year old (:wtf:) system.

I loved the PSP when it came out and have a lot of nostalgia for it and the hacking scene, I want to see if you all have some good reasons for me to spruce up my PSP and continue enjoying it like it's 2006.

I love my Steam Deck and it's amazing and does everything but it's not exactly pocketable like the PSP. And the GBA is great, especially with an everdrive but it does a lot less, if you still choose the PSP over the Vita or anything else, then how come?

I love the PSP such new and cool design..

wait...

wait a minute.

20 years....WHAT DO YOU MEAN 20 YEARS!

Thank you for your input everyone, it's really cool to see there are others out there that actually still appreciate this device!
I picked up a fresh battery and a microSD to Pro Duo adapter for a 128gb micro SD card.

It arrived yesterday and I've been enjoying some Wipeout Pure and reading Saya no Uta on it.

Gonna try and keep it limited to those two for now otherwise I'll have the same problem I have with my Steam Deck and just scroll endlessly through the game list and never land on playing anything for any amount of time.

Reasons I stuck with PSP over Vita:
- Size: I love how much smaller my 3000 is than the Vita or Steam Deck, I can pocket it easily when I go on EUC rides.
- Nostalgia: So many games to revisit either on PSP or consoles it can emulate
- Better UI: That weird candy-button menu thing the Vita has going for it is kinda soulless, and I love the audio player.
- More moddable: Opening the PSP and swapping the battery/screen/speakers/buttons is pretty easy

The main reasons I was considering the Vita was:
- Emulation Power: SNES9xTTL was meh on PSP last I tried, I'm sure the Vita could do a better job but probably not by much.
- Better screen: The OLED display on the Vita is nice even though I'd be constantly worried about burn-in
- Vita games I never got to try: There are a few like Gravity Rush and MGS ports but there aren't many there

Overall these reasons had enough caveats that I still didn't feel like a Vita was worth the effort.

The PSP just generally feels like such a no-frills gaming device that reduces the barrier to outright enjoying a game vs something like the Steam Deck or an emulation handheld where you can constantly adjust settings. I also never have to worry about entering "offline mode" either when I actually go outside with the thing.

Maybe soon I'll look into swapping the somewhat vestigial UMD drive with a huge battery but for now I'll just enjoy it as it is.

This is why I love playing any game on their original hardware. No messing around, just pure gaming the way the developer intended. There might be downsides, but sometime the limitations of the time is what makes a game truly enjoyable

...portability/Options/If the games you like are on the hardware ...then just keep it.

If there was cross-saves for all platforms, I'd be chuffed
I still have to get a Steam deck, but I'm hardly on the PC, I'm hardly on the consoles. I bought that Steam Link - whatever it was called - ages ago and I still have to open it. It's probably not supported anymore

Anbernics are what I'm looking at, with all the hassle of getting Boktai to run on the og3DS, and finally got it running on the PSP

...that said, if you're selling your PSP, I'm sure there's gamers here interested

yeah I love my steam deck honestly but it's very bulky. I've decided that the PSP is definitely my machine for visual novels and native PSP games but most other stuff I guess I'll lug the Deck around.

Your Steam Link is still supported and should work pretty well, especially if you can get an ethernet cable to it.

Team Link is still supported! Wow - That's how little I care about setting up my PC to play on, hahaha
I asked my brother if he want to set it up on his PC and he didn't even answer (PS5 and digital only games 4 dat boi!)

...I tried reading an ebook on the PSP-3000 OGscreen ...very tiring - LCD-replacement is probably in it's future, else a small tablet I keep for reading

...Nintendo Switch is not portable enough for me these days. The Steamdeck looks so good though ...will hold out for StD II :P

edit: The Music Player and controls!
The PSP&PS3 had the best media controls over the following generations, imo

Sony has lost that creative people, even their old e-gadgets were nice

PSP has a size portable enough to be enjoyed, neither too big nor too small.
It has a good catalog and can emulate decently several other handhelds.
It has big and comfortable buttons similar to the gba, not like the vita or the ds/3ds that are small and uncomfortable.
It can be connected very easily to a tv and play on a bigger screen if they are model 2000 and up.
If it is a go model it compensates for its lack of ergonomics with the possibility of connecting a ps3 controller via bluetooth.

I still have my PSP, but don't use it as often as before since I've got a R36S.

My PSP analogue controller is not working anymore and I don't know if I should invest on a new one, as I don't use it at all, because I use my PSP for emulation purposes and not for playing PSP games.

But it surely has survived and aged better than other consoles from Sony.

Do you mean the joystick? Very easy and cheap to change

Yeah, I know that, but as I mentioned, if I don't use it, why should I invest in a new one?

I use my PSP for emulation of classic consoles (all of them are 2D graphics based), so I find no use to the analogue joystick.

If you dont need it you dont need it. But it cost 5$ and takes 5 minutes to change of you ever feel the need

It seems to be the ONLY portable system designed for multimedia - the DS has MoonShell and it does a fair job for the system's limitations but still it's an aftermarket addon, the Vita loses serious points due to the database & Content Manager, nothing else really tried except iPods for which the same complaint applies :)

Vita has good games (3 of them start with "Spelunk", and then there's Everybody's Golf 6), many added gimmicks that are largely a pleasure to use, is better at PS1, but it blows at PSP with your choice of laggy or blurry scaling and having to go through Adrenaline, and of course LiveArea << XMB and the above mentioned database BS

(This opinion is based on when I had one 2017-2019, back then I joked about it needing a "NoPspEmuDrm" plugin and apparently it was actually made, almost makes me regret selling it lol)
