Why cant ds just play regular video formats?

    Why cant it? Is it a hardware issue?

    Because it's not powerful enough, that's the reason. PharaohsVizier is talking about Tuna-viDS which plays back AVI files. You still have to convert them to the right dimensions and audio codec, and then it can run up to 12 fps fullscreen, 15 fps or so if not fullscreen.
