PS2 is more profitable to develop for? If you develop a PS2 title chances are you can port it to the PSP, PC & Wii.

Exactly as as hadrian said... its very easy to port between the ps2 and wii, so i think that as long as wii is around probably ps2 will to, cause they will probably make very very cheap ports from wii games to ps2. and get easy and fast cash... and if you look at every past generation, "last gen" consoles has always been supported a few years into the "current gen" systems lifespan.. the NES had allot of titles released even after the Genesis/MD and SNES was released.

Did you hear Sony is releasing a new PS2 Lite? (79000 series, 77000 series is obsolete now)
Original PS2 weighed 900g, PS2 Lite weighs 600g. AC adapter also got a 100g weight cut.
PSP hardware is 280g, so basically PS2 weighs a little more than 2 PSPs. (PS2 and PSP AC adapters should weigh about the same)

Seriously, do you carry laptop to lectures? Aren't they like 1kg+ just the laptop and you'll also need to carry AC adapters?
This model is so very PS2 Portable. Not PSP2, PS2P.

No size/spec changes except the weight. It's cheaper to produce lighter weight PS2 for Sony, customers are more satisfied (If they plan on buying a brand new PS2 at this point)

NOTE, Sony doesn't call it "PS2 Lite" or "PS2 Portable" I'm just making fun of it.
I wonder if they plan on making slightly bigger than CDP (Well still gotta take in games

) version with 3~400g weight named 90,000 series

Because there are 100 million PS2s out there, compared to ~12 million 360s/~7 million Wiis/~4 million PS3s. Distributors and developers like profit maximization. Go figure.

i think that figure includes all SOLD ps2's
How many of you got a replacement for your ps2?

I know i got 2.
Its fair to say that although the PS2 sells a lot, its build was not as great of quality as the NGC or XBOX (the slimline ones are nice though)
PS2 just became succesfull because of its console exclusives and success of the PS1 gave it a great initial word of mouth, And the great graphics(at the time) certainly helped too.
Since then gamers have grown up and we look at more than just graphics now, Thats why the PS3 isnt doing as good..
NGC and XBOX were more powerful(i think) and had more potential, but you cant beat good marketing(something which the NGC DIDNT have) and accessibilty

I think it was more likely the lack of competition for the PS2. At launch they had ZERO next-gen competition. They were essentially competing against the N64!

Never underestimate the power of first to market. I was so shocked when I heard that Sony and Nintendo would be an entire YEAR behind XBOX360.

The PS3 also has the added complication of the format war to deal with. People are slower to pay for Blu-Ray in the PS3 than they were to pay for DVD in the PS2. DVD was clearly going to be the next format while BR is still up in the air.

Sony have done really well still releasing. Nintendo gave up with the gamecube and microsoft dropped the xbox overnight. If you got the ps2 near release day you've had your moneys worth game releasing wise.

I think it was more likely the lack of competition for the PS2. At launch they had ZERO next-gen competition.

They were competing against the first 6th gen console, the Dreamcast, which didn't have the best start in life.
A limited marketing budget and limited 3rd party support (no EA support) didn't do much for the Dreamcast though.

By the end of this year though (maybe early next) PS2 will be all but dropped, but still widely available at retailers due to the expansive back catalouge and masses of new stock.

We'll see a lot of younger generation games coming out and more "educational" feel ones. Since when most people upgrade they will pass their hardware on to their younger siblings.

I know i got 2.

I got my PS2 on launch day and it still works wonders. I have never had to replace it. I did mod it though, I wonder if that may have increased it's life, but then again I have never had a computer or video game system break on me except my NES.
