I've looked at this page but I can't seem to find where it started auto-updating (and bricking system until updated).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_U_system_software

Version 3.0 says:
"Addition of Standby Functions Feature
This feature enables data for purchased software, system updates and software updates to be downloaded and installed automatically even after the console has been turned off."

Does that mean that this is when it starts to force updates? Or that this is just when you have Standby mode enabled?

However, 3.1.0 says this:

Improvements to Standby Functions
The standby functions will now regularly connect to the Internet when the Wii U is powered down to check for available SpotPass data or software and system updates. Software updates will be installed while the Wii U is powered down, and system updates will be installed the next time the Wii U is powered on.

The reason I ask is because I may be getting a Wii U on Black Friday ( http://wiiudaily.com/2014/11/best-b...-on-black-friday-15-off-nintendo-eshop-cards/ ), but would want to keep it open for Wii U homebrew.

Any idea what firmware version the SM3DW bundle would come with?
