He's right in that there is a potential for better visuals if a developer didn't use 3D. After all, IIRC you're rendering the image twice at 800x240 in 3D mode. Restricting it to 2D wouldn't require you to render an image twice at a higher resolution but instead at 400x240.

I used to think the same before the 3DS was released but 3D is so awesome that I don't even care anymore.
