Gaming When playing WoW... Graphics or RAM?

Apparently, he tried it, and it's fine. There's a few lag moments here and there, but other than that it's cool. Also, in his private server, there are only like 300-500 max people on at the same time.

Is it hard to remove and install RAM? Because we have an old computer we are about to throw away and it has 512MB of RAM... I was wondering if I could remove that somehow and add it to mine? Thanks!
 
You have to make sure it's the right ram for the motherboard in your computer. But otherwise, removing/replacing ram is probably the easiest part of computer upgrading.

Just pull yours out and check the bottom of it and make sure it matces the one you want to put in.

Check this to see what kind of ram you have. It will most likely be one of the bottom 3. (or possibly the one in the upper right.)

cool! so, if you have private servers (that are free) would WOW monthly fees not apply to you? and... more coer 2 Duo (e4500) is only 4 bars?!?! wtf! all I need is a new video card (current: onboard GMA 950)
 
Actually, the GMA900 series of integrated chips are powerful enough to run WoW smoothly at low/medium settings. World of Warcraft gets better framerate from memory upgrades than graphics upgrades anyway. Not that graphically intensive of a game.
 
yeah, gexx is right.
another 512mb of ram will help the rest of your computers performance aswell.
i suspect that it will be DDR ram, or the chances are slim but maybe DDR2.
 
but the 8600GT's DX10 performance is awful, and you can get a more powerful DX9 card for less. honestly, any 8600 card is a waste.
but yeah, the 8800GS seems like its gunna be a popular budget card.
 
You can get a graphics card that's great for wow for ~80 dollars, but I'd go with more ram since it's less money per performance (if that makes any sense), easier to install, and if the lag you speak of is occasional freezing is almost guaranteed to be the ram due to the constant need for wow to run a garbage collect (say you have 5MB of ram free, every time WoW uses up that 5MB, it has to clear all the non-essential things in the RAM, which means a pause in the game). I used to play WoW on 512 MB and the occasional freezing almost drove me insane (it gets worse in later parts of the game). The pdf manual that was on the computer when you got it should show you how to install RAM and what type to use.

If you do decide to add a graphics card, just remember to change the graphics mode in the bios from integrated (to get into the bios menu, push the setup button when your computer turns on, it will say something along the lines of SETUP=F11
 
Well, if RAM will make my computer faster overall, then Im definitely going for that. Im not sure where the RAM in my computer is located though, so I can check what kind it is. Anyone have some sort of diagram?

look at the owners manual pdf file that came with the computer (all recent dells come with them).

It's not really that it's bad, It just pales in comparison to its older siblings. It actually isn't much more powerful than the 7900GS, and gets framerates really close to the 7600GT in some games. But if you want a budget card with some power, your choices are really pretty limited due to price hikes on the old 79xx series hardware.

Or as Urza said, wait for the 8800GS.

8800GT 256MB - $215

Radeon HD3850 256MB - $170 (close competitor to the 8800GT, though not as powerful.

And no, if you do get one, you're getting this one.

Gigabyte 8600GT 512MB (Your's was 256 and more expensive. Brand name thing.)

If you opt for the 8600GT, but don't want the Gigabyte, I recommend the eVGA one simply because of their awesome support, including a lifetime warranty and the step-up program.

WoW doesn't use DX10. If you're looking for raw gaming performance upgrade, get a powerful DX9 card, such as a ATI X1950Pro or XT. Those cards are cheaper than the 8600GT's and perform MUCH better.
If you're looking for an all round performance upgrade, get more RAM.

And the RAM slots are small, thin slots that are to the right of the CPU when you look at it. I imagine there will be 1 stick already in there. Just make sure that the other stick is seated correctly.

ALSO, if there are 4 RAM slots, make sure that you put the extra ram in 2 slots away from the original. for example;

numbers one-four represent the slots, the I's represent the sticks of ram present.
 
I think I have a 240 pin DDR-2 DIMM because I have a Dimension E310 desktop, and I googled it, and that's the type is says it has. If not, I guess Ill have to open up my comp...
 
The speed is most important. The max it supports is probably the same as what's in it - DDR2 266, 333, 400, 533, 677, or 800.
 
So I guess to make sure, Im gonna have to open up my computer and look for it? D: I guess I have to, since Im going to Frys this Sunday. How will I know what kind and speed it is? Does it say on it?

It says it's PC2 4200. Now, there's a problem with that. I look on Fry's and there's no PC2 4200. It's either DDR PC4200 or DDR2 PC4200. Another thing is, my computer only can have up to 2Gbs.So... should I just buy 1G and have 1.52 Gigs of RAM, or should I buy 2 Gigs and just take out the RAM I have right now and replace it with the 2Gbs?
