Out of mere curiosity, what are the advantages of using VLC over MPC? :]?
Only real advantage is the fact that VLC uses it's own codecs. It usually handles large HD/1080p video very well too.

As for myself: CCCP + MPC most of the time. VLC when things are played on the "big" TV or I need to play "large HD/1080p video".

GOMPlayer is my favorite media player. Wish it had better themes but then again you never see the application itself when you're watching

Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center on Windows. I'm too lazy to install anything else.

VLC Media Player for Linux. Ironically, I wasn't lazy and did get something that works for my Linux installation.

Other : BSplayer pro.

Because it's easy, user friendly and customizable (like filter priority, winamp dsp plugin), easy to load subtitle (drag drop), no obtrusive windows or menus.
I like the keyboard shortcuts, as I'm using a remote I can create useful script using Girder.
the cons :
it doesn't read ssa/ass subtitle natively, or srt subtitle's tags.
and sometime can be a pros: it downgrade the video quality of 1080 HD video if old computer can't read it without lags.

using CCCP, all is working great.
using CoreAVC, CPU is way lower, but some h264 video are badly decoded (maybe it's a codec problem and not the player). I just set the codec priority when needed.
