what is the official resolution of a us wii console over component? i recently connected my wii to a different tv that tells me what resolution it's running at and it said 720x480. i have it set to 480p. 720 sounds like an odd horizontal number. is this 4:3 or 16:9? is this a smushed widescreen image in 4:3 that gets unsmushed by my tv?

maximum resolution of the wii is 640x480, widescreen or not. there's a big article about it somewhere on the net.

here's one thread http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46169&page=1

internally it could be for example:

which would appear to you as:

nsmb854.jpg

in the uk for example, our 'full hd 1080p' is actually broadcasted in 1440x1080. apparently people aren't meant to notice a drop in horizontal resolution as much as they do with the vertical resolution.

apparently most wii games are rendered in 640x448, which is why they look so poor.

my tv reports 720x480 whether it's 4:3 or 16:9. this is apparently the resolution of progressive scan dvd's, but i'm still completely lost as to how the image is made to be 16:9 or 4:3. something to do with non-square pixels? idk.. stupid wii should've just been hd to begin with.

HD would have been more expensive

Nintendo did it to keep both software and hardware costs down. It costs more money to make an HD game than an SD game because less detail can go into models and textures.

Yeah so after some research it is apparently 720x480 no matter what the setting when using component cables. I guess I've never run into this resolution before which confused me a lot, but it's a standard DVD resolution.

it's called "anamorphic" resolution, the Wii displays the resolution internally at 640x480 but resize it to 720x480 if you set it to 16/9
that's why Wii games still look best on a 4/3 CRT TV
