Cheat code works by hacking game memory. When a cheat code don't work perhaps the address cannot be resolved or written to ( best case as nothing happens ) or the code may be hacking the wrong memory ( potentially very bad )
When the wrong memory was hacked there are a few possibilities, the memory location didn't matter ( best case ), the game crash ( still not too bad ), the game has been damage but you can't detect it ( the worst ).
As a user you don't know which just happened. To play safe it is always good to make a backup of your save and to restore it when any cheat code you enabled don't work.
