Hacking What happened to the 3Dbrew ?

Just because it has the potential to =/= guarantee unlike what many people think. Jumping the gun and hoping for unicorns is just setting you up for disappointment. Watch as some noobs break down and cry while blaming and accusing the team of letting them down/scamming or whatever should this decapping not turn out how they want it.

Exactly. It would be worse than the AMD Bulldozer fiasco, even if there are less people complaining....... Wow, that will be really bad when people come on and say that crap.

However, at the same time, even if it doesnt give us an exploit, it can give us an extraordinary insight on how that SoC even works, which will be important no matter what lol.

IIRC (it's been a while)...

AMD came out with "bulldozer", a codename for one of it's architecture refreshes... this is not an uncommon thing to do at all, in fact coming out with new architecture revisions every 2-3 years is completely normal for AMD and Intel, and they usually just decrease power drain and/or increase efficiency a bit (or add some minor feature).

However AMD saw fit to advertise Bulldozer as being this amazing new unicorn-fartsparkle stuff, and when it came out it turns out it actually had a bug in the design that made it perform worse. People were not happy.

And now im waiting for steamroller before considering a new CPU for my Crosshair V Formula (was bought after Bulldozer came out; I needed a good MoBo for my Thuban).

But yeah, Overclock.net was pretty bad for a while, I wonder what would happen if we don't crush make people realize that their hopes may not be fulfilled solely on the Decap.
 
all they're doing is decapping the 3ds, that doesn't mean anything. they will probably release the codes and someone else will try to work with it.
 
Question from an interested lurker:

What kind of data can the chip decap give to the 3DBrew folks? I don't believe it is possible to rip codes or anything from the chip utilizing external sources, so it's more about how the chips interact with eachother right? I'm just asking because I want to learn more.

Well, sometimes it is possible to extract logic or even code by decapping. A few years ago someone broke a smartcard crypto engine by decapping and delayering it's chip, taking highdef pictures and anaylizing the logic gate structures.

There are also companies who specialize on getting software out of microcontrollers (officially for the ("oh noes. we've lost our codebase and need to extract our program from our own product", but there are most likely also cases of "lets see what our competitor did there").
