The title question is pretty simple, so I don't think there's much need to elaborate. The dev question is this: Where is stdin directed to on the switch? If you used nxlink would stdin be redirected to the PC too?

i don't think it stood for anything this time around unlike past consoles (RVL=Revolution=Wii, TWL=Twilight=DSi) and is just simply NX. maybe it could stand for "next" like next generation, considering the console/handheld hybrid the switch brought to the table, or "annex" for the same reason, but this is just random brainstorming and probably not likely.

As others have said NX was just the codename Nintendo used while developing the Switch. They have never publicly said what it stands for, if it stands for anything at all.

As for the other question, I don't think you can use standard input from a keyboard on a Switch. You can get input from a keyboard but afaik it doesn't go to stdin. You have to use special functions to get the keys.
Look at this: https://switchbrew.github.io/libnx/hid_8h.html#aad162f78078c0d0594495b040ccb4965
Stdout on the other hand can either go to the Switch's screen or to a terminal on PC via nxlink. https://github.com/switchbrew/switc...r/graphics/printing/hello-world/source/main.c
You can also use the Switch's keyboard applet but it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for?

From a 2015 TIME.com article with former Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima

"But where the codename “NX” comes from turns out to be a mystery

“As for the codename NX, I don’t believe that there’s any real meaning behind it, and to be perfectly honest, I don’t know where it came from,” says Kimishima, laughing when I ask. “Or perhaps Mr. Iwata had meant to tell me and then never got the chance.”"
