I've recently managed to get my hands on a debug PS3, and I'm wondering exactly what I can do with it.

It's currently in the post, so I can confirm exactly which model it is, but it's my understanding that it's from the first batch of test units. It's in the UK, but I don't know if it's a UK region one. It's on a firmware from like 2008.

Things I'd like to do:
Play backups of PS1/2/3 games either off the internal hard drive, or via USB.
Play ps1/2/3 retail discs of any region.
Copy retail/backup discs to hard drive/USB.
Access my PS+ games.

Are any or all of these possible? Thanks.

An ACTUAL debug unit? Or a retail unit that was just converted from CEX to DEX?

Find that out first. DEX/debug units are way more of a hassle than they're worth. You should be able to do most of those things minus the PS+ games.

it's functionally identical to a retail PS3. you can convert it to act just like a normal PS3 or a jailbroken PS3.

there was a time when owning a debug PS3 was an advantage to testing homebrew and doing research, but it's pointless now.

just admire the "debug" decal on the unit, that's about it!
(I highly suggest that you install custom firmware, not only can you backup all your games but you can use cheats and mods on them. also there's emulators, region free bluray, lots of stuff.)

To answer the OP more accurately, you can do all of the things originally mentioned.
Going online is risks a ban, but most people with CFW go online anyway.

Just don't update the firmware unless you know what you're doing.
3.55 is the latest official firmware you can install before you make the console unhackable.
You can spoof later firmware versions to go online.
There are higher versions of custom firmware (I'm on 4.46 with full functionality) but they're built from old bits of firmware.

Cool. I think I'll go with a custom firmware.

Since it's already dex, am I right in thinking that it will be relatively easy to install something like ps3ita, and would this be a good choice of firmware?

It seems like it would do most of what I want.

I did used to have a ps3 with custom firmware, but that was a few years ago, and it seems they can do even more these days...

surely a (real) debug unit would not have such an issue? with the ability to run your own code i'd assume you could downgrade easily via software rather than having to do a hardware-based downgrade...

Not selling it because it was a present.

Just confirmed its a DECHA00A model, so it should have full ps2 hardware bc.

Am correct in thinking that the best path is to update to ofw dex 3.55, then update to ps3ita 4.5 cobra dex?

Then can I load everything from internal hard drive? It's got a 60gb drive in there ATM, but I might replace it with a 500gb one.

What is debug? I brought a second hand ps3 and it had debug. Also is this the reason it won’t let me sign into the PlayStation store?

My Question Is About DECHA00A Can You Add A CFW At Any OFW Mines On 3.55 Dex But That Is To Low To Play All The Games

Ok That's What i Thought I Just Didn't Want To Brick My Sytem Thanks For The Confirmation So The Install On Certain Ofw Is Only Related To Cex Unit Interesting. P.s Can't Quote You It Thinks The Link You Give Is Mine

So I found out That Changing Firmware On DECHA00A Is Like Playing Roulette And I Say That Because It's A Dev Kit The Devs Are Switching Firmwares A Lot On Them Before You Get It P.s Mine Is Know Got A Corrupted Nand It Can Be Fixed But It's Very Hard

I managed to jailbreak my ps3 today serial CECH-L04 (Cex) and NOR it's like everything different between us. I hope you manage to do it:)
I have a good video where you maybe could get some information from?

Good luck.

FarGt That's Cool But Your Model Like You Said Is Nor Which Is One Flash Chip Nand Is Two So Much More Difficult Thanks For The Good Vibes Thou.

I bricked mine trying various things to get bluray playing working, but was able to recover it using a teensy to put it into manufacturing mode and booting a homebrew self for installing a pup.

yes, DEX PS3s have invalid retail PSN IDs, which is why there's a separate PSN (that got locked down) for DEX PS3s
Hmm thats interesting I wonder if that had anything to do with the 2011 psn hack incident. Considering Sony was forced to terminate psn accounts as a result.
