I remember that some games were hacked to use different controllers than they were intended like Donkey Kong Country Returns, were there any advancements on the USB front?

Personally I'm interested in plugging USB adapters in the back to use like N64 controllers and such...

I have adapters through the GC ports but they often introduce input lags.

just wondering since I haven't been in the Wii scene for a LONG time.

not possible on Wii games.
it can only use official controllers. Even if you manage to make it use another controller, it's still an official one (like classic controller instead of wiimote), but no unofficial one like PS4 or XBox

games have their own controller's drivers compiled with the sources.
to make new controllers detected it would require writing a new driver from scratch and patch each games one by one with a different code (it can't be generic patcher).
