Why is Squidward called Squidward when he is an octopus and not a squid?

Mr. Krab's is obviously a crab and his wife is a crab so how come his daughter Pearl is a Whale?

How come in a few episodes people in Bikini Bottom which as we know is underwater are seen sitting round lit campfires?

How come Gary is super intelligent in some episodes yet in others he is really dumb and needs SpongeBob to do everything for him?

Creator Steven Hillenberg has confirmed in the past that Squidward is an octopus he also said he only has six tentacles because it's easier to animate him with fewer tentacles.
