I understand this isn't the correct topic but what's the difference between ext2(3)(4),etc. and FAT32?

They are different filesystems, plain and simple.
ext is used for unix based systems, fat and ntfs is windows based. wbfs is Wii. I dont know what MAC uses though...

Mac uses HFS or HFS+ or fat32 as well.

In my first post I said, that a defragmentation tool is not needed. Nevertheless I will bring my knowledge and help for this project. What's wrong with this?

--- snip ---

I'm sure that for most users FAT/NTFS is the better choice. But the reasons most people announce are wrong. It's not the technical aspect, it's the usability for the average users. And every time a user says "I'm using WBFS" there are a lot of statements like "WBFS is bad/outdated/poor/slow/waste". You can find such single (trolling/flaming) statements also in this thread. And my fight is against these preconceptions, because they are simply wrong.

I will now quit this discussion level ...

Pretty sure it is outdated, don't see how you can call that trolling/.flaming.

I like WBFS ....... and most people will too ....I have an SD card slot for a reason , thats why I like WBFS

Most people will? That is future tense not past tense and everyone has already tried WBFS just about.
And what does an SD card have to do with anything? lol
Yea you can load games off it, not a lot though.
Actually if you do some simple google searches you will see from previous topics and polls people prefer fat32 or ntfs over wbfs.

On the other hand, many WBFS people using the old and buggy "WBSF Manager 3.0" (and other old and buggy tools)

I am using WBSF Manager 3.0 by AlexDP, what program should I be using? I have found it pretty solid myself.

Also I am sticking with WBFS, FAT32 is old and problematic.

I use wiimms wwt+wit tools, but afaik most recomend wii backup manager (wbm)

using wbfs because fat is to old
like the design of wbfs is modern lol

FAT32 is old and problematic.

... What? Its probably one of the least problematic filesystems around, simply because its old and have a ton of different tools available to keep it fresh. (+ a lot of technical stuff I cba to go into)
If it wasnt for the 2TB limit and 4GB filesize limit, Id probably run fat32 on all my slave discs.

Thank you all for this great topic.

I've used WBFS on my HDD (500GB as 1. WBFS 250GB 2. ext4 250GB) for more than 1 year without problems, and 2 months ago I changed whole disc to FAT32 because I think it is good thing to have EMU roms and .avi files for WiiMC on same partition.

So, now I think I made mistake. I get "Exception DSI errors" more often, so I'm thinking that reason is:
- FAT32
- latest updated CIOS
- much less compatible HDD for FAT32 than WBFS (iomega 500GB)

Anyway, WiiMM or any other experienced user please what are your suggestions to use on my Wii to get the most stable system?
I do have 500GB HDD, and I would like to change it back to WBFS + FAT32 for WiiMC movies.
How to split it? Two primary partitions? 1st WBFS, 2nd FAT32?

Is there any tool to convert my FAT32 back to WBFS without copying to my computer (linux preffered).

Thank you.

P.S.
I'm using wit tools + sometimes WiBaFu as GUI.

I highly doubt that fat32 is the reason for the crashes
a hdd shouldnt really be incompatible with one filesystem

I dont think that there is a tool to convert fat32 to wbfs (much less split it in a fat32 and a wbfs one in the process
(shouldnt be that hard but I don't think that there is much interest in creating it,
I might consider making one if you have eg a sc-dstwo you desperatly need to get rid of *g*)

the easiest and fastest way is probably to resize the fat32 (fs AND partition)
then create a new wbfs partition in the now free space after the fat32 one
and finally copy the games over
(afaik "parted" can do that)

as long as you can manage with 4 or less partitions I would stick to primary partitions

iirc some tools using fat32 can only use the first primary partition (eg HBC iirc)

Basically because trying to force your oppinion on others is a bad thing.
(except (in SOME cases) to protect pepole from someone elses bad choices, but thats no the case here)

Even more so if you lack the means to actually do it.
What do you suggest we should do to get rid of it?
Some people aparently want to use it for varios reasons.
Even if each and every tool, loader or whatever thats is updated to dropps support they would simply use the old versions
And most tools aren't updated anymore.

Offering advice and a simple way out for those that don't want to use it anymore was the only reasonable thing that could be done.
With those that still want to use it we simply have to live.
It's thier choice after all even if we don't agree.

Additionally its not that bad.
If you only use "good" tools like wiimms wwt to manage games you should be fine.
OS other than windows don't ask you constantly to ruin your WBFS either.

The same thing happens with or without SD card inserted in Wii. From 7/10 boot up I get 7 Error DSI Exception.

Yep,
that stupidy by Windows OS, if Windows don't recognize filesystem it is, to them, logically to destroy it.
I do not use Windows, so I don't have such problems.

Anyway,
my formatted USB Stick with WBFS don't show Exceptions DSI Error, later today I will convert my HDD FAT32 back to WBFS, and other half of partition I will format to ext4, because I see that cfg usb loader and wiiMC both support ext4.
