Warcraft help?How do you play online?

Hey!
So recently iv decided to go back to playing warcraft but how do you connect to other players online.
I have installed the frozen throne on my desktop and it works but u can only play campaigns and such.
How do you actually play online and what is the difference bewteen LAN and just online?What else does online playing require?

Could someone please give me step by step instructions that are clear!

oh frozen throne
LAN is playing with computers you are connected to. You can play online by battle.net
it only requires an email to make a bnet account and you can choose whichever gateway (kinda like a server) and you can play online...
Now the problem about this is that these days, it's really hard to find a player at your level playing a normal warcraft game... all they play is dota :\

it's not the same, but yeah, DOTA is a game in warcraft.
