Hey everyone:)
I just recently got a new video card, FINALLY!
Its an Ati Radeon X1600, passive cooling model by asus.
But I never had a dedicated card before, and I have noticed that it gets quite hot in about 10 minutes (touch).
I don't really measure the actual temperature of it, but in speed fan it says that it is 37 degrees (CPU).
First off, how can I check the temperature of my GPU?
And, how long would I have to play a game on low settings, before it gets too hot ex. melting or something that messes it up??
Thanks for your help.

Any passive card will get hot. My non-passive 8800GTX gets hot enough to actually burn my skin. Generally, as long as it doesn't get above 80 degrees Celsius, you're perfectly fine. The card won't actually damage itself until the 100's, though.

you can grab GPU-Z.

if its passive cooled, it shouldn't get hot enough to damage itself. just worry when your card actually has a fan and reaches over 100C

i've recently picked up a 4850, on load it dips over 100C at stock fanspeeds.

Wow, I'll try GPU-Z, It doesn't have a fan though, its like a huge exhaust pipe and a heatsink.
Heres a photo of SpeedFan.

But, I don't get it, when you touch it, its soo hot, but its only 37 degrees??

. Anyway, can't the catalyst control center read the temps on the card?

As for getting too hot, that shouldn'\t happen in a normal situation (which I guess you have). If you are genuinly concerned you could always add a fan to cool the graka (grafix card), spinning slowly thus not making noise but still creating airflow.

Personally not well informed about the x1600 series but my experience with passive models is that they tend to get very hot (my 4350 gets around 80 degrees without any airflow in the case, riding purely on convection. With my fans in place all spinning around 300rpm it stays around 40 degrees celcius).
