american wii = american update.

even if you are in the UK you can only update via american servers if you are on an american wii.

besides that, if you are downgrading your wii, you get to choose what region you want it as anyways. so you just choose U right?

you COULD update/ downdate to another region, but it'd only be the users stupid fault lol
