Use gamepad with screen OFF ?

Can i completly switch off the Wii U gamepad screen and just use it as remote to prevent battery life?

What are you gonna suggest next? To turn off the mostly useless LED on DS4 while playing, so it won't glare off the TV screen? Crazy talk, man.
