What is USB Gecko?

USB gecko is 3rd Party Memory Card Interface Adapter which allows homebrew and hobbyist developers the ability to connect their Gamecube? or Wii? console to there PC which has a USB 2.0 Port.

What are the advantages of having such device?

With PC connectivity, it allows remote access to your programs, so you can do things like disassemble and watch memory activity all in real time. The product also has an open source API and examples which allows developers to create their own software and tools.

Can this run Wii homebrew?

The device is currently developed on Wii in Gamecube mode, but Wii mode features are planned and will be implemented in later firmware / software updates. At this time the USB Gecko is hardware compatible but are waiting for a legal and public method of booting executables in Wii mode.

What is Geckotool?

Gecko Tool is an ongoing software and firmware which developed in house to show what can actually be done with the product, It includes things like disassembler, memory poke, breakpoints, extract DVDs, manage memory cards, grab screen shots from games and homebrew ect. This is free software and software updates will be available regular in the download area

Can this play backup games?

No this device is not a piracy device and never will be. The device is aimed at developers,
programmers and also hobbyist Gamecube and Wii enthusiasts.

Can I connect a Hard Disc to this?

No it is just for PC to Wii/Gamecube connectivity.

Can I save my games to USB Gecko?

No. The USB on-board flash is used for storing the firmware and other loaders and programs. However with Geckotool you can download, upload, delete Gamecube Game Saves to a memory card in Port A, this supports the popular GCI file format. This is useful for uploading cheat based saves or just backing up your saves PC.

Gecko Tool is for Windows, do you have other operating systems planned?

Version 2.0 of Gecko Tool will be for MAC, Linux and Windows, we also will develop a 64bit version for 64bit window users at a later date.

Is it upgradable?

Yes all software is upgradable and releases are planned to be released on a regular basis.

Can it run on a unmodified console.

To run it on a unmodified console you will need an old version of action replay, or SD media launcher by Datel, We have a product called 'Gecko launcher' which will be released in early 2008 which will also allow a none solder legal way to run the adapter.

Some other none solder methods are also being worked on.

I have a X modification chip in my console can i run USB Gecko with this?

Yes, this might be the best method until we release our none solder solution.

I have just bought this, where to get support if needed?

We have an online support forum which is the best place to get support, you can also email us if the matter is urgent. Please first read the manuals and FAQs and most information will be there.

What is a Hook?

A hook is a piece of code which gets called every frame or every two frames and executing, it interrupts the normal control flow allowing our code to run there.

What other features are planned for this product?

We have many new features like cheat function, trainer, and also Wii features which will all be added in later firmware releases.

Sounds cool, hopefully there will be a surefire way to use it without a modchip and buy a extra peripheral.

I think you will be able to run code through gecko without a modchip indeed.
The modchip is only required to run DVDs, but since this boots from a gamecube memory card, this will be sufficient.
Now we just have to wait until the guys from wiidev finish their loader.

Well what do you know? I start bitching about Nintendo's ability (or should I say disability) to give out licenses to shitty developers, and now this happens.
Well, nintendo isn't responsible for this. It was necessary to hack the console, retrieving secret encryption keys "just" to be able to run code. Now the guys responsible for this and some more are very busy figuring everything out so they can code a loader for all of us. Nintendo is still full of shit as far as this is concerned compared to x360 and ps3, and their online is pretty much 10 years behind, too

You know, most of you guys dont probably need usb gecko, there is a sd gecko available for like $5 that will probably be able to launch homebrew games too. It will just not have that fancy remote debugging thing which most of you probably dont need
