I'm getting a Wii (with Wasabi chip which I read was a good chip) and I want to backup originals discs rather than download. Should I get a LG drive that reads them or should I get the USB Gecko device? I'm a bit clueless of the Wii scene at the moment. Any advice appreciated.

The USB Gecko would be a good choice, if your Wii is close-ish to a computer. It also allows you to take screenshots of games and run imports. It's also faster and cheaper than an LG drive.

Is there not a dumper that works with the wii to allow you to dump stuff to the USB gecko (I know there is plenty that uses the SD-Gecko)? Not sure if any updates appeared for dual layer stuff but if it needs to it will.

Also the USB gecko is used a fair bit for current and GC homebrew, admittedly the inbuilt SD slot and hopefully the USB and wifi will be used in the future.

In short USB gecko every time.

i like LG .. better ... i just got my usb gecko and it takes long .. LG takes about 2 hours to dump .. and usb gecko takes about 3 hours ... but i like the lg better

It's an expensive DVD-ROM drive. I'd rather have the gecko even if it's slightly slower - it does more.

My LG dvd-rom8164b cost me 17.99 and s/h was 5.99 from ebay ... usb gecko cost me 46.99 ... but i like the lg better

That was something I was thinking about too. My PC is close but not quite USB cable close (maybe 2.5 - 3 meters) . I have a laptop etc but 3 hours to back up a disc sounds like a DVD Rom may be better... Not sure still. What's this about allowing imports? Does Wasabi etc not let you play imports yet?
