Upgrading ps4 hdd without reinstalling everything?

I want to upgrade my 500gb to 1tb, but I can't be assed to transfer my saves and reinstalling all my games.
My ps4 has my account 'logged in' but I havent been online for years and my ps4 is on fw 5.05.

So i was trying to upgrade my hdd, and during the process of installing of new hdd, I got to a point where i was prepping for format, but it stopped because I didn't use the full update pup.
Now my ps4 is stuck on 'cannot start the ps4 connect the dualshock 4' and ps4 refuses to continue because for some reason, the ps4 refuses to connect to controller.
- I can turn on ps4 with controller but not after
- tried multiple cables, even dug up the original box and cable and tried both usb ports
- I put the old hard drive back in and I'm still greeted by the same screen
- able to boot into safe mode and still can't get past a 'connect ds4' screen

you could try the backup/restore option that's built into the firmware. it's more prudent to put your games on an external hdd, and backup your saves by having your account activated.

Yeah, that's probably the only way.
It's just annoying since you need ANOTHER external drive to copy everything to, then you've got to recopy everything. Why the extra step that literally takes hours to complete.

i agree, but the ps4 hdd is slow enough as it is, don't want it to be constrained some more on usb 2.0 speeds

The ps4 uses 3.0. It won't even allow a 2.0 drive.

Update, I think i soft/bricked my ps4 somehow. Updated first post with details.
Couldn't update the thread title though, maybe I should make a new thread.

maybe @KiiWii or @Leeful has a suggestion. I don't know what to do if the controller won't respond. did you put the big, nearly a GB update pup on the flash drive?

9/10 it’s the charger cable. Make sure it’s a charge and sync cable, not a cheaply charge only cable.

We sell £12.99 cables at work for PS4 and they don’t work, but yet the ones for android phones which are half the price (£5), work perfectly.

That red cable is what I used, the vita especially is notorious for not liking data cables.

it's 100% not the cables, like i've said, I even took the original ps4 cable, that i've never used out of the ps4 box, along with multiple other cable i know works, and nothing happens

it also can't be usb ports because i just backed up my ps4 with it

Try formatting the hdd on the pc

update, I was able to borrow another ps4 controller and I got it working.
Somehow, during the ps4 setup, the controller broke, even though it still lights up.
So, while this makes no sense, it's the only conclusion.
